Today, Grammy-nominated American singer, songwriter and soon-to-be-published author Margo Price announced her new project, Strays, will be released on Jan. 13, 2023. In celebration of the album announcement, Price shared “Change of Heart,” a single off the LP, along with an accompanying music video.

On the 10-track project, Price addresses loss, failure, trauma and substance abuse and sonically reveals how she tackled her demons with an indomitable vigor. The result is an album unbound by genre and expectations, one that celebrates freedom in all its forms. Much of the inspiration for the album came after Margo quit drinking; her newfound clarity allowed her to create something musically ambitious and also thematically unabashed on which she sheds her unique light on self-worth, self-image, self-love, bodily autonomy, and the purest of pleasures.

Strays marks Price’s first new album since 2020’s acclaimed That’s How Rumors Get Started. The album was produced by Price and Johnathan Wilson, who is known for his work with Father John Misty and Angel Olsen, over a week at Fivestar Studio in Topanga Canyon, Calif., in the summer of 2021. The majority of the songwriting occurred a year prior when Price and her husband Jeremy Ivey explored their minds and South Carolina over a six-day period while holding hands with psychedelic mushrooms.

With a renewed sense of self and comfort, Price experimented with her longtime band, the Pricetags, and confidently dove into the waters of psychedelic country, R&B, pop and rock-and-roll. They tracked in the same room together, exploring and expanding upon their previous works while consciously creating something entirely new. On Strays Price also welcomes vocals from Sharon Van Etten and Lucius and guitar from Mike Campbell.

“I feel this urgency to keep moving, keep creating,” shared Price in a statement. “You get stuck in the same patterns of thinking, the same loops of addiction. But there comes a point where you just have to say, ‘I’m going to be here, I’m going to enjoy it, and I’m not going to put so much stock into checking the boxes for everyone else.’ I feel more mature in the way that I write now, I’m on more than just a search for large crowds and accolades. I’m trying to find what my soul needs.”

Today, Price premiered “Change of Heart,” one of the first tracks she, Wilson and the Pricetags cut for Strays. The kaleidoscopic country pop tune christens what is to come with direct country riffs, layered arrangement and crystalline lyrical musings. Much like the recently-released album preview “Been To The Mountain,” the song comes with a conscious expanding music video directed by Courtney Hoffman.

Price also shared she will set off on a tour comprised of over 30 headline shows across North America starting in late November through early March of next year, making stops in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, Tenn. and many more. All of the newly added tour dates are on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Friday, Sept 23rd, with presales beginning at 10 a.m. local time tomorrow.
