Following the bottom falling out on the Thor franchise with 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel Studios is reportedly looking to take the character in a different, less goofy direction going forward. And according to reports, they’ve spoken with Mad Max mastermind George Miller about the project.
Whle the 79-year-old George Miller is best known for directing all the films in the Mad Max franchise, he’s also directed movies such as The Witches of Eastwick, Lorenzo’s Oil, Babe: Pig in the City (he wrote and produced the original), Happy Feet and its sequel, and Three Thousand Years of Longing.
Miller most recently helmed Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which released to critical acclaim in the spring of 2024 and featured Thor star Chris Hemsworth in the villainous role of Dementus. That relationship apparently led to Miller meetin
“Feige has reached out to numerous directors for World War Hulk, including George Miller. Additionally, Miller has also shown interest in helming Thor 5, and it was actually his Furiosa star, Chris Hemsworth, who set up the meeting between Miller and Feige,” reported World of Reel.
“One shouldn’t be surprised by Miller’s interest in directing an MCU movie. He had a planned DC movie, Justice League: Mortal, fall apart during the very final days of pre-production.”
In the wake of the disappointing fourth Thor film, Hemsworth said that the franchise would need to take itself a bit more seriously again if a fifth movie were to happen, and Miller would certainly be a step in that direction, certainly compared to Taika Waititi.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing,” Hemsworth said following the disappointing reception to the film. “I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly.”
Next up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Captain America: Brave New World, which hits theaters on February 1. Then, Thunderbolts hits theaters on May 2. According to World of Reel, both of those films will be key to setting up World War Hulk, which was briefly teased back in the Disney+ series She-Hulk.
