Ludwig Göransson has won Best Original Score at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards for Oppenheimer. He beat out Mica Levi (The Zone of Interest), Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi (The Boy and the Heron), Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), Black Midi associate Jerskin Fendrix (Poor Things), and the late Robbie Robertson (Killers of the Flower Moon) for the trophy.
In his speech, Göransson thanked director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for “inviting him on this journey” and the musicians who helped bring his score to life. “Working with Christopher Nolan has been an incredible experience and I think the way that you use music in your films and storytelling has inspired a lot of people,” said Göransson. “I want to also thank Cillian Murphy. I have been watching your face over and over and over again and it’s been an incredible experience.”
Right after Göransson’s win, Billie Eilish and Finneas took home the Best Original Song trophy for “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. They were responsible for one of three Barbie songs in the category (next to Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken”), alongside Bruce Springsteen’s She Came to Me track “Addicted to Romance,” Lenny Kravitz’s Rustin contribution “Road to Freedom,” and Jack Black’s viral song from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, “Peaches.”
The 2023 Golden Globe for Best Original Score went to Justin Hurwitz for his work on Babylon. Meanwhile, M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose took home the award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR.
