Lake Street Dive have unveiled Good Together, the band’s eighth full-length album. Set for release on June 21 as its first album with Fantasy Records, this latest project has been described by the group as “joyful rebellion,” a conscious effort to bridge social division and soothe contemporary distress with focused enthusiasm. This announcement is accompanied by the album’s high-spirited title track and the details of the band’s largest tour yet, which will bring it to a total of 43 engagements this summer and fall.
On “Good Together,” Boston’s premier indie-rock quintet finds its groove again with polished precision, pushed forth by renewed zeal in its plot to overcome dispute with dance. This is pitch-perfect power pop, featuring a duet between Rachel Price and Akie Bermiss atop a bouncing staccato synth riff, completed by exultant horns and an undeniably funky danceable backbeat. Crafted through an uncommonly collaborative songwriting process, the result is a strikingly sweet taste of the band’s message of resilient happiness.
“There’s a lot to be angry about in the world right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to constantly live in that anger – you need something else to keep you going,” shares drummer Mike Calabrese on the group’s bold new outlook. “Joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way this album is our way of saying, ‘Take your joy very seriously.’”
Lake Street Dive will kick off its tour to support Good Together on June 14 at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage. In its first move, the band will cross the northern border to perform at the Ottawa Jazz Festival and Toronto Jazz Festival on June 27 and 28, then return for a three-show Northeast series highlighted by a headliner booking at Marshfield, Mass.’s Levitate Music and Arts Festival on July 6. Next, the band will truck on to the Midwest for five shows in the region segmented and two in the Southeast before hiking to a previously announced and sold-out trio in the Mountain region, including a July 21 presentation at Morrison, Colo.’s prestigious Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
While in the West, LSD will stage for a three-night run through the Golden State, starring a July 27 set at Los Angeles’ The Greek Theatre, plus four shows the Pacific Northwest and an appearance at Vancouver, British Columbia’s Orpheum Theatre on Aug. 1. After two to-be-determined shows in Seattle, the band will hop to the opposite coast for a pair at Portland, Maine’s Thompson’s Point on Aug. 17 and 18. Next, the band will scan the Mid-Atlantic for bookings at high-profile venues like Columbia, Md.’s Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sept 13, New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 14 and Philadelphia’s The Mann on Sept. 15.
Lake Street Dive’s second Midwest leg, composed of six shows, will be highlighted by a two-night stand at Chicago’s The Salt Shed and send the group into its final six-show Southeast stint. The ensemble’s most exhaustive tour to date will finally come to a close in Atlanta with a pair of shows at The Eastern. Tickets for the Good Together Tour are on-sale now.
