Kirk Herbstreit sat down with Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman of On3 Sports on Tuesday to talk a little college football. At one point in the conversation, he dropped an interesting admission about his social media activity for listeners.

In the process, he threw his own son under the bus. That may not have been Herbstreit’s intention, but it was certainly a narrative that followers ran with.

The College Gameday host says he deleted Twitter “a long time ago,” while speaking on the current state of social media in sports. He claims that his son has since been running his @KirkHerbstreit account.

“I deleted Twitter a long time ago,” Herbstreit stated. “I don’t have it. I just have my son, tweet stuff out. I don’t [have it]. It’s ridiculous. I don’t read anything. I don’t see anything. Nothing… I don’t pay attention. I don’t look at it.”

On the surface, that doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Many celebrities have others run their social media accounts, and Herbie’s one of the biggest names in the business. With that being said, his on-air commentary of certain fanbases would lead one to believe quite the opposite.

He often refers to social media in his college football discussion, as well as topics being talked about which directly involve his opinions. Many of those same thoughts are then reflected on his X timeline.

Herbstreit’s Twitter account can be combative at times.

Last year, Florida State fans attacked Kirk Herbstreit for his opinion on the Seminoles’ College Football Playoff omission. He returned fire on multiple occasions. Herbstreit believed the committee ultimately made the right decision despite FSU’s spotless 13-0 record.

‘Noles fans obviously disagreed, which eventually led to an online back-and-forth between the analyst and his following. The criticism seemed to get under his skin.

His target shifted to the Ohio State fanbase this season as he attacked the Buckeyes’ “lunatic fringe” for wanting head coach Ryan Day fired. Again, a back-and-forth argument with his online accounts followed. But maybe it wasn’t Herbie after all.

Kirk Herbstreit threw his son under the bus.

By stating that his son is the actual operator of his Twitter account, Herbstreit suggests that it’s he who’s been arguing with college football fans over the last few years.

Just last week, the account was seen reposting a number of fan messages with combative replies. Most involved his supposed bias towards having SEC representation in the College Football Playoff.

“Why let facts get in the way of a bulls— narrative?” he replied to another follower that same day. It would seem whoever is running the account is very in tune with the criticism Herbstreit’s received for his recent college football takes.

Herbie insists it’s his son doing his dirty work for him. It’ll take much more convincing to get fans to actually believe he doesn’t know about the online hate he’s received due to his past commentary targeting certain schools.
