Katy Perry Mocked for Choreography at "Lifetimes Tour" Kickoff

It’s been just over a week since Katy Perry went to space, and she might still be getting adjusted to Earth’s gravity — or, at least, that’s what it looked like in viral videos of the pop star’s 2025 tour kickoff on Wednesday night, showing quite a bit of unimpressive, low-effort choreography.

The concert was the first of a three-night residency at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, and marked the beginning of Perry’s “Lifetimes Tour,” supporting the release of her lukewarm 2024 comeback album, 143. In fan-uploaded footage of the concert, it’s shown that the show is somewhat conceptual, presenting a loose plot based in a video game about Perry — a “half-human, half-machine” — taking on an “all-powerful AI called the Mainframe.”

In a narrated exposition at the beginning of the show, more plot details are revealed — like that the Mainframe has stolen the world’s butterflies and that dogs are abandoning their friendship with humans in favor of cats — but all the half-baked story aside, the stage show itself seems to have utterly failed at the “cool dancing” element of any classic pop show.

Now, several exceedingly uninspired moments from the show have racked up millions of views.

In one, Perry gives Darth Maul vibes with a double-sided red lightsaber-equse weapon, with which we’re supposed to believe she’s fighting off villains (the “Mainframe”). In actuality, she just kinda slowly trots around the stage and gestures at her foes with the staff. At one point, an enemy literally just grabs the lightsaber and the two play a kind of tug-of-war with it. As several Reddit commenters pointed out, even children could have choreographed a better fight scene.

In another video, Perry is seen doing some middle-school-musical level choreography before dropping to the ground with her feet in the air, prompting this great (and NSFW) tweet.

In all, in the wake of recent innovative stage shows (like Lady Gaga’s Coachella set) and monumental nostalgia tours (like Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour”), Perry’s presentation simply falls flat. To quote one commenter on TikTok, perhaps Perry “should’ve spent less time in space and more in rehearsals.” Watch the clips for yourself below (or watch the whole show here).

No matter the choreography, the “Lifetimes Tour” will continue. After wrapping in Mexico on May 2nd, Perry will bring the show stateside for a US leg hitting Houston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and more, followed by some Australian dates. Then, in July, she’ll return for another US leg, performing in Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, New York, and more. Get tickets here.
