Former Super Bowl winning NFL head coach Jon Gruden joined Barstool Sports at the end of 2024, giving football fans a whole new insight into his famously quirky personality. His favorite show, for example, is The Walking Dead, but not for the reasons you might think.
While sitting down for a stream of the NFC Wild Card Round game between the Washington Commanders (who won on the road) and the Tampa Bay Bucs, Jon Gruden — likely realizing that it was the time The Walking Dead usually airs — went on a tangent about the long-running AMC series, which premiered in 2010 and concluded in 2022.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 15 years, The Walking Dead tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies.
“I wish I was at home watching The Walking Dead,” Gruden said during a Sunday night stream of the NFC Wild Card round game between the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Bucs.
“You ever seen The Walking Dead? Might be the best show I’ve ever seen. I mean, people are getting *eaten*, man. Innocent people just getting snarfed. And you start rooting for “the walking dead. I’d start rooting for them. I can’t wait to see what happens.”

While the main The Walking Dead series concluded with its 11th season in 2022, numerous spin-off series are currently on the air, such as The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (a miniseries which featured original series star Andrew Lincoln).
Over the years, The Walking Dead has famously recruited famous fans of the series to play zombies, similar to Star Wars casting A-listers as hapless stormtroopers. Now that Gruden has revealed himself to be such a fan of the series, perhaps AMC should give him a call.
