JESSICA Simpson is back with new music for the first time in 17 years – and her new track comes with a warning.
In January the 44-year-old confirmed she and husband Eric Johnson had split after months of rumours they were living separate lives.
And Jessica is channeling her heartbreak into new music, with her first release since her sixth studio album Do You Know dropped in 2008.
The With You hitmaker’s comeback track Use My Heart Against Me debuted today and the lyrics contain what appears to be a reference to her ex-husband.
On the upbeat, country-infused song, Jessica sings: “Don’t misuse, don’t confuse my love.”
It will feature on her upcoming EP Nashville Canyon, Part 1.
Last month Jessica released a statement confirming she and retired NFL player Eric, 45, had separated.
She told People, the design mogul said: “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage.
“Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.
“We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
Jessica and Eric share daughter Maxwell Drew, 12, son Ace Knute, 11, and daughter Birdie Mae, five.
It’s not the first time Jessica has used her new music in reference to the break-up.
In November she wrote on Instagram: “Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic.
“This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.”
That same month an insider exclusively told The U.S. Sun that Jessica and Eric have had problems for years, “even before the pandemic.”
“It’s sadly no surprise they could be heading for divorce,” the insider said.
“Eric has often left Jessica alone at night to go out partying at bars, he didn’t ever seem to care if anyone recognized him or not. She is sober now, so that’s not her scene at all.”
Jessica and Eric met in 2010 and were engaged six months later before getting married in July 2014.
