Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman, the star and director of the upcoming Roadhouse remake, are reportedly “pissed” at Prime Video for not giving the film a theatrical release.
Despite the fact that the remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze film is reportedly getting high scores at test screenings, Prime Video has no plans to put the Gyllenhaal-starring remake in theaters, according to Puck News.
In an effort to reverse the decision, Gyllenhaal and Liman reportedly screened the film for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in hopes he would be on their side, however, Amazon Studios head Jen Salke didn’t change her mind.
“The funniest part of famously a–hole producer Joel Silver getting dropped and replaced on Amazon movies for asshole-ish behavior is what wasn’t in today’s trade reports. Silver, director Doug Liman, and Ari Emanuel (a Silver buddy whose WME reps star Jake Gyllenhaal) were so pissed that Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke refused to give Liman’s Road House remake a theatrical release that Ari convinced Jeff Bezos to screen the film on his yacht, with the hope that Bezos would love it and push for theaters. Salke knew it was happening, and it didn’t change her mind, but an A+ effort.” [via Puck News]
Alongside Gyllenhaal in the lead role, the Road House remake also stars Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Darren Barnet, and more.
Road House is just one of many projects that Gyllenhaal has upcoming in the next few years, as he’s also attached to films such as Prophet, Francis and the Godfather, The Division, The Anarchists vs ISIS, and some Guy Ritchie movies (earlier this year, Gyllenhaal starred in his war movie The Covenant). He’s also set to star in the TV series The Son from Denis Villeneuve, Presumed Innocent, and Lake Success.
At this time, Road House does not have an official release date.
