AN Influencer has found a coin worth thousands of dollars thanks to a manufacturing error.
In a post, a TikTok creator and coin collector who goes by the username Wheats To Sheilds (@wheatstosheilds) talks about three types of dimes that can be found in circulation worth thousands of dollars.
The first time she mentions is the 1965 dime.
What makes this dime so rare?
This 1965 dime was crafted on a silver planchet.
This is not typical for the dimes manufactured that year, as they were supposed to be made as copper-nickel.
Therefore, silver planchet is the wrong metal for the dime.
“Wrong metal means big bucks,” the TikTok creator said.
So, how can you tell whether or not your 1965 dime is copper-nickel or silver?
“You’re gonna have to get it weighed,” explains the creator.
“So if you weigh this 1965 and it weighs 2.5 grams, you got yourself a silver dime. And there’s a party over at your house.”
Meanwhile, another coin collector’s item is the 1966 dime valued at more than $2,000.
The TikTok creator said while most dimes made in that year are worth face value, there is one thing that you might not think to look for that makes it worth a lot of money.
The error is a misplaced die, an atypical error unique to 1966 dimes.
Due to a manufacturing error, the number 5 on Roosevelt’s face can be seen on the obverse.
Specimens like this are scarce and can be worth thousands of dollars at auctions.
