Everything I’ve learned about Hilaria Baldwin, Alec Baldwin’s wife and mother of 5 of his children, has been against my will. But that’s not to say that most of the things I’ve learned about the Boston-born woman of English, French-Canadian, German, Irish, and Slovak descent who attended the Cambridge School of Weston ($60K-$75.2K tuition) hasn’t been wildly entertaining because every time I see Hilaria’s name attached to a news story I know it’s going to be good.
I was scrolling through X (née Twitter) when I came across a Jerry Thornton article on Barstool Sports titled ‘Alec Baldwin’s Wife (from Boston) Comes Up With the Worst Excuse Ever to Justify Why She Sometimes Talks With a Fake Spanish Accent.’ Obviously, I’m going to click that. There’s no scrolling past that.
Let me give you the quick rundown of what’s going on…Alec and Hilaria Baldwin (and their kids) have a TLC reality TV show premiering this Sunday, February 23rd. Hilaria did some press for the show and spoke with the DailyMail where she was asked about her fake Spanish accent and why she speaks with it.
For those who aren’t familiar, Hilaria Baldwin’s high school friends claim she did not have an accent in high school. Which, of course she didn’t, because she grew up in Boston. She flips the accent off and on whenever she wants but not only that, she pretends to forget words in English, acting as if Spanish is her first language, which it is not… Here’s the first story about her adopted accent:
This video from the TODAY Show has Hilaria Baldwin on a cooking segment with the accent cranked up to 11 and in it she appears to forget (or pretend to forget) the word ‘cucumber’ and says “how do you say it in English?” as if she only knows the word cucumber in Spanish despite being a native English speaker who was raised in Boston:
This isn’t the first time Hilaria Baldwin has pulled this. In 2020, she forgot the English word “cucumber”. It’s desperate and cringeworthy. pic.twitter.com/m4l6fXtNVz

Bostonian Hilaria Baldwin Explains Fake Spanish Accent
In Hilaria Baldwin’s defense, she is bilingual and does speak Spanish. And if you are going to be bilingual you best do it with an authentic accent. Hearing an Aussie speak Spanish with an Australian accent is inscrutable for native Spanish speakers.
Putting in the effort to master an accent is important, but Hilaria Baldwin sticking with the accent while speaking English? And pretending to forget words in English? As a native English speaker? C’mon… Here’s what she told the Daily Mail:
“My nuclear family now lives over in Spain. I want to teach my kids pride in speaking more than one language. I think just growing up speaking two languages is extremely special. I love English and I also love Spanish, and when I mix the two, it doesn’t make me inauthentic. When I mix the two, it makes me normal!”
She went on to then flip the switch and claim the victim for being called out for speakign English with a fake Spanish accent… Hilaria Baldwin said:
“I would be lying if I said it didn’t make me sad and it didn’t hurt and it didn’t put me in dark places. But it was my family, my friends, my community who speak multiple languages, who have belonged in multiple places, and realize that we are a mix of all these different things and that is going to have an impact on how we sound and how we articulate things and the words that we choose and our mannerisms.”

‘The words that we choose’…. words like ‘how do you say in English?’ when you are a native English speaker from Boston? Words like that?
Is she of Spanish descent? No. No she is not. Her heritage is English, French-Canadian, German, Irish, and Slovak. But yeah, she has family in Spain and visits there sometimes. Does that explain her adopting a full-blown inauthentic Spanish accent out of nowhere? No, no it does not.
Here’s the trailer for The Baldwins which premieres this Sunday:
Will you watch? At the very least, it will be entertaining, right?
