Great British Bake Off 2022 RECAP: Matt Lucas’s new look revealed and first baker axed as new GBBO returns

Amanda Georgiou was sixth to leave the tent last year

GREAT British Bake Off returned to our screens last night with Will being the first baker to be booted off the competition.

Fans were delighted to see 12 new bakers – and as Janusz was named star baker for his cake designed like his mother’s flat, Will was sent home for his cake.

GBBO returned with the dream team; Noel Fielding, 49, Prue Leith, 82, Paul Hollywood, 56, and Matt Lucas.

As they entered the famous tent, fans had plenty to say about funnyman Matt.

They did a double-take when they saw the Little Britain legend and flocked to Twitter to comment on his astonishing weight loss.

Meanwhile, fans swooned over baker Sandro on Channel 4’s Bake Off.

They took to Twitter to say he was the icing on the cake.

The show will hit our screens every Tuesday night for ten episodes and we’ll be rising to the occasion by keeping this blog as fresh as a newly-baked souffle over the course of the series with all the very latest from the world of GBBO.

You can catch up with any episodes on All4.

  • Hon-bun

Aww did you see Janusz in fits of laughter as he called his boyfriend to tell him he was star baker?

    What a dude.

  • Bye, Will

    Oh nooooo!

Will was so sweet. Such a character.

Fans are not happy he’s gone.

  • Jealous of Janusz

The Polish baker killed it with his mum’s flat cake.

Did you see him almost in tears when he was named Star Baker?

  • Bake queen

Did you see Prue and Paul gushing over Dawn’s delicious 11-layer cake?

    Even with its subsidence.

    Lol.

  • Reb’s relieved

Did you see her close to tears when Paul and Prue adored her pina colada cake?

And Paul thought the sponge was overcooked when she had been worried it was undercooked.

    Score!

  • Buzz in the kitchen for Syabira

  • Trouble ahead

    Oh no, Rebs.

Did you see she looked like she wanted to cry when he sponge wasn’t cooked all the way through.

    Eek.

  • Gram’ designs

Fans aren’t sure whether they are watching Bake Off or Grand Designs after contestants must bake their ‘childhood home’ in the technical challenge.

  • So just who is technical challenge winner Syabira?

Apart from the person who beat our beloved Sandro to first place in the baking challenge…

Malaysian-born Syabira is one of seven children.

She moved to the UK in 2013 to study for her PhD and is now happily settled in London with her boyfriend, Bradley.

She loves gaming and often spends evenings playing an online World War II simulation game, which she credits with teaching her about leadership in the real world.

Syabira started baking in 2017 with a red velvet cake, which reminded her of the treats she shared with her friends back home.

She is all for giving Malaysian flavour twists to British classics – chicken rendang cornish pasties are a particular favourite.

  • Heart-breaker

Bake Off fans… (and Prue) were left swooning tonight over hunky contestant Sandro.

The 30-year-old nanny showed off his impressive baking skills, but those watching the hit Channel 4 show at home were more interested in his appearance.

  • Break it off

Fans just love all the ad-breaks.

    Erm, not.
