Today, Gorillaz have announced they will release a brand new studio album titled Cracker Island on Feb. 24, 2023, via Warner Records. The news comes hot on the heels of their summer single featuring Thundercat of the same name.
Along with the announcement of the album, the English virtual band also released a single entitled “New Gold ft. Tame Impala & Bootie Brown,” along with an accompanying music video dripping in gold and psychedelia. The track was first performed lived at the All Points East Festival in London earlier this month, where they were joined by the artists featured on the track.
Cracker Island marks the eighth studio album from Gorillaz, who originally formed in 1998, and the expansive collection of 10-tracks featured on the project once again showcases the group’s ability to remain elusive and indefinable despite all the time in the world. The project features an astral lineup of collaborators, including Bad Bunny, Beck, Stevie Nicks, Adeleye Omotayo and the aforementioned Thundercat, Tame Impala and Bootie Brown. The project was recorded in LA and West London and produced by eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Greg Kurstin, Gorillaz and Remi Kabaka Jr.
Of the band’s new record, Gorillaz guitarist Noodle said, “Cracker Island is the sound of change and the chorus of the collective.” While Russel Hobbs added, “When the reckoning comes, gotta be ready to step through the gateway. Cracker Island’s got the entry codes…”
Gorillaz have been on a world tour that started in South America earlier this year and have since been sharing their eclectic sound with crowds around Europe and Australia. They’ll come to North America in September and perform through October with a show kicking off in Vancouver on Sept. 11. Find a complete list of dates here.
