Academy Award winning actor Gary Oldman, who played Harry Potter’s uncle Sirius Black in the original movie franchise, has again expressed his interest in playing Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO series.
Unfortunately for Gary Oldman, HBO has already made a casting decision of who will be playing Albus Dumbledore in its highly-anticipated Harry Potter series, as the role went to 79-year-old Oscar-nominee John Lithgow.
Still, during a recent interview, Oldman reiterated that he would’ve loved to have “a go” at playing Dumbledore, one of the key roles in the Harry Potter story as the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and the only wizard with power equal to the villainous Voldemort.
“My personal feeling is they’re not going to go anywhere near people that were connected to the original. I’m actually very intrigued to see it because so much of the books were cut. I would’ve fancied a go at Dumbledore. I’m getting up there now, it’s the right age for Dumbledore,” the Oscar winner recently told Variety.
Oldman had previously expressed a semi-serious interest in the Dumbledore role.
“I love Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil,” Oldman told IndieWire at the Emmy Awards last year. “I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people… Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”
Ultimately, though HBO has decided to go with an entirely new cast of characters that don’t have any previous connection (unlike the somewhat pathetic recent news that former Draco Malfory actor Tom Felton playing Lucius Malfoy in the Broadway play).
In addition to Jon Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, HBO’s Harry Potter series has cast Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid alongside newcomers Dominic McLaughlin will star in the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is expected to begin production later this year ahead of its premiere sometime in 2026.
