FKA Twigs in Workout Gear Shares "Amazing" Rehearsal

FKA Twigs is rehearsing in her workout clothes. In a new social media post the singer shows off her incredible body and impressive dance moves while rehearsing for an upcoming show. She captioned the Instagram photo and video, “day 1.” How does she approach diet, fitness, and self-care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

Twigs has been exercising since she was really young. “Since as early as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with training and taking classes,” she told Nike. “When I was three-years-old, I started taking dance classes at a local youth center, and by the time I turned seven, I was training in six different dance styles… When other people wanted to go on holiday or hang out with their friends in the park, l just wanted to take every class that was available.”

Twigs main form of fitness is dancing. “People don’t always see dancers as athletes, but we are. Through dance, I’ve met young people who work really hard and have dedicated their lives to being active. To me they represent ‘modern movement’, which I define as exploring any genre of sport without boundaries,” she told Nike.

Twigs also pole dances. In an interview with NYLON her instructor, Kelly Yvonne explained that “the main thing required is core strength. Most people think it’s arms or upper body — which it is, also! — but the origin of most pole movement is the abdomen.” Dancing is a great workout for many reasons. Not only does it build strength and promote flexibility, but helps you lose weight and even promotes cardiovascular function. A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine determined that people who engaged in moderate-intensity dancing were 46 percent less likely to develop heart disease or die from it than non-dancers. In comparison, moderate-intensity walkers were just 25 percent less likely to suffer heart health issues.

Twigs is a fan of martial arts. Studies confirm that the practice helps with balance, cognitive function and psychological health in addition to weight loss and physical fitness.

Twigs explained to Vogue that in order to soothe her body’s fight-or-flight response, she practices restorative modalities, including a movement practice she developed based on the principles of polyvagal theory. “I’ve had to be very compassionate with myself and really listen to myself to get better. Now I want to challenge myself to know more about the simple, most pure and important things: love, nature, food, a nontoxic lifestyle, my body,” she says. “The path I’m on is not the pastel pink yoga leggings aesthetic.”
