How to Upgrade a Weekend Outfit

A weekend outfit can be easy to phone in. Seriously, let’s just speak the truth. There’s no need to dress up for work. If you’re leaving your house it might only be to run a quick errand. So, like, who is there to impress?

Well, if you care about your personal style, you already understand that the only person you really dress for is yourself. So it would make sense that you’d want your weekend outfit to be just as considered as any other outfit you wear.

However, I’m not suggesting you get in the habit of wearing a three-piece chalk stripe flannel suit to the Home Depot on Saturday morning. Far from it. There definitely are ways to upgrade your casual weekend style more subtly.

And here are three suggestions for how to do it.

A classic quilted vest. When you’re dealing with a sporty foundation, like an athletic sweatshirt, light wash denim, and white sneakers, adding a classic piece of outerwear from a heritage brand instantly takes it up a notch.

My personal favorite is Barbour’s Lowerdale quilted vest. The quilting adds some texture and visual interest. It’s easy to throw on and looks casual and sporty, yet elevated. And it’s a high-quality garment that only gets better with age.

Add a subtle sartorial touch. Even with the most casual weekend outfit, don’t be afraid to add in something more sartorial. There’s no rule that says you can’t cross the streams. A simple and stylish scarf subtly peeking out from beneath your vest adds a dash of dashing. A small detail that distinguishes you in a big way.

Upgrade your cap. For me, there’s nothing like a baseball hat to cap off a sporty weekend outfit. Choose one in a seasonal fabric–wool for the winter, for instance–to flex some seasonally sartorial muscles.

In conclusion, upgrading your casual winter weekend outfit isn’t that difficult. A little thought, effort, and consideration pays itself forward massively.
