In December, Shakira fan Michael Mejia was beyond excited when he was chosen as the winner of the singer’s custom-made purple Lamborghini Urus. He won that car after creating a video in which a drawing of Shakira comes to life to the sound of her song “Soltera.”
“This car was a gift to myself as I began my single life, but I realized that what truly matters is human connection,” Shakira said in a press statement announcing the contest. “The car, the clothes, the material things — they don’t transform us. It’s the people we love and the connections we build that truly make a difference.”
Not only did he win the actual Lamborghini Urus that Shakira used in her music video for the song “Soltera” following the breakup with her husband, former professional soccer player Gerard Pique, the singer also paid to ship the fancy Lamborghini with a two-tone white and neon-green interior and gifted him $90,000 to register, insure, and maintain the luxury SUV.
“We did it! We did it! We did it!” Mejia shouted in an Instagram video following his surprising win.
Fast forward a few months and now Michael Mejia’s dream of winning Shakira’s purple Lamborghini Urus has turned into a nightmare. Turns out that maintaining a Lamborghini Urus is expensive!
“So far, all the taxes for transferring the car, legal matters, and insurance for six months have been paid. And now, the federal taxes are due at the end of the year,” Mejia explained recently on El Gordo y La Flaca. He says the Lambo is costing him over $2,000 a month in insurance and that he has to spend $70 to fill the gas tank up every two days.
The good news for Mejia is that, as has been proven repeatedly in the past, there is surely someone out there with more money than they know what to do with who will be more than happy to take Shakira’s purple Lamborghini Urus off his hands. In fact, he claims someone has already offered him between $700,000 and $800,000 for the SUV.
Shakira will probably understand why he has to sell her Lamborghini. After all, she is no stranger to how it feels to have money problems.
