Widespread outages were reported on Tuesday morning as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads all went down. The outages were confirmed by DownDetector.com.
Millions of Facebook users discovered the site was down when they opened the mobile apps or desktop pages and were prompted to login.
Users who attempted to login were quickly booted out again as Instagram, Threads, and Facebook all remained down. Persistent users who kept trying to force logins were prompted with a message of “An Unknown Error Has Occurred” on Facebook.
On Threads, users were met with a message saying “Sorry, this page isn’t available” and on Instagram millions were met with a message saying “Something went wrong. There’s an issue and the page could not be loaded.’
The cause of outage remains unclear at this time as the outages began occurring around 10:22 AM on the East Coast.
Within minutes, #FacebookDown was trending on X, formerly known as Twitter. Users flocked to Elon’s site to confirm that Facebook was down for everyone and it wasn’t a one-off situation.
Facebook has remained down for over 28 minutes as of the time of this article being published.
As of 11:11 AM on the East Coast, all of Meta’s products including Facebook had been down for 50 minutes. According to Statisa, Meta earns $800,000 per minute (as of several years ago). That represents a theoretical loss of at least $40,000,000 as Facebook remains down but the true value of the outage is unknown.
