Dave Portnoy breaks pizza review rules with instant re-review

Barstool Sports boss Dave Portnoy broke some of his own rules with re-reviewing a pizza after being urged to during a review.

Over the last few years, Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy has become the internet’s go-to source for pizza reviews. His ‘One Bite’ videos – which see him take a lot more than one bite – have garnered hundreds of millions of views and changed the fortunes of hundreds of pizza joints.

Even though Portnoy can be pretty lax on some rules at times – including taking just one bite – he rarely will re-review a whole pizza so quickly after a disappointing experience.

However, during his trip to Pizzeria Rustico in Boston, the Barstool boss ripped up the rule book as his trip was interrupted by another customer.

Dave Portnoy instantly re-reviews pizza for first time

Portnoy kicked off his review by noting that his pizza had been left sat in a box for almost 10 minutes after another customer cut his place in line and had staff rushing off their feet.

He soldiered on with the original pie at first, giving it a score of 6.7. However, other store owners next to the pizza shop urged him to give it another try. “I think you had a bad day. It’s not usually like that,” a neighboring worker said. “It is usually better, I don’t know,” another said.

That prompted Portnoy to head back inside and ask for a fresh slice, breaking his own rules on instant re-reviews. However, the pizza shop cooked him up a fresh pie instead. That got a much better review with a score of 7.3/7.4. “I’ve gotten too nice, I’ve gotten too soft,” the Barstool boss said.

The re-review was much to the annoyance of his security who said he’d be waiting for “hours” if he starts giving everyone else a second chance.

“I’m not going to make a living out of doing re-dos, but everybody loves this guy. He’s working his ass off, he’s running around in circles. This is like a 7.3 pizza, 7.4,” he said. “Way better.”
