Dana Carvey has taken an understandably lengthy hiatus from his Fly on the Wall podcast following the untimely death of his son Dex in November. After a two-month absence, Carvey rejoined co-host David Spade this week. “I thought about this over the holidays and decided to come back to the podcast because I think, you know, it’s a long day when you’re not working and you get in your head,” he confessed. “And I think (doing the podcast) is going to be a great break, and I think it’s really cool to laugh.”

Carvey began the podcast by thanking everyone who has shown their support over the past two months. “If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” he said. “I just want to say that the amount of outpouring online and emailing and people I still haven’t been able to call back is incredible.”
Spade marveled at “all the goodwill out there that was going through me to tell you. Even Mrs. Farley, Chris’ mom, wrote a letter for me to give to you.”
Despite the number of people asking if there was anything they could do to help, “you really can’t,” says Carvey. “It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey. We’re all together, and we do a lot of fun things. We hike, go to church, you just want to make sure that you keep moving.”
The desire to keep moving is what brought Carvey back to the podcast. “I think it’s going to be very healthy for me as I recover because I’m on the pain train with millions of other people on this planet,” he said. “You don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it’ll stop or when it will get better. But in the meantime, all this kind of stuff is very healthy.”
Fly on the Wall has been sharing prerecorded conversations and best-of episodes in Carvey’s absence, but now that the comic is back, he’s doubling down on podcast projects. “We want to tell everyone we are doing a spin-off,” announced Spade, “another podcast called Superfly, a spinoff of Fly on the Wall.”
Details are a little hazy, but here’s what we know: Superfly will drop on February 2nd with videos on the comics’ YouTube channel. In addition, says Spade, “we’ll have clips on Instagram and Tik Tok and you can comment saying, ‘Oh my God, these guys got old.’”
Unlike Fly on the Wall’s conversations with old friends, Superfly will feature the two SNL alums working out actual comedy bits. “I’ll tease this,” says Carvey. “I have a new bit I’m working on where Barack Obama calls Joe Biden and can’t quite hear him clearly so he gets Hunter Biden to interpret.”
Your mileage may vary on whether that premise sounds promising, but we’ll find out in a few weeks. Stay tuned.
