Chris Evans certainly seems to be aware that his career has been a bit directionless since he wrapped up his stint as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Since 2019, which saw Chris Evans feature in both Endgame and Knives Out, the now 43-year-old has starred in Pixar’s Lightyear, The Gray Man, Ghosted, Pain Hustlers, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Red One, with virtually all of those films being a disappointment in one way or another.

Evans’ slate this year is a bit more promising, though, as he’s starring in Materialists, Celine Song’s follow-up to Past Lives, and Ethan Cohen’s Honey Don’t!.

While out promoting Materialists with his co-star Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson, the former MCU star joked that his recent movies have “ruined his career.”

Evans is also reportedly set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, although it’s unclear which character he will be playing.

With Robert Downey Jr. starring in the film as Doctor Doom and NOT Iron Man, it’s certainly possible that Evans in playing a character other than Captain America, with some fans speculating he could either be playing the hero Nomad or the villainous Captain Hydra, both from alternate universes than the main MCU.

Earlier this Spring, the release of Avengers: Doomsday — which is being helmed by Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo — was delayed from May 2026 to December 2025, with its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars being bumped to December 2027.

You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Evans’ latest film Materialists, which hits theaters on Friday, June 13, below.

“A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker (Johnson) finds herself torn between the perfect match (Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Evans).”
