CHER has stepped back from her bid to become her son’s conservator.
The pop music icon previously filed for a conservatorship, but is now privately working things out with son Elijah Blue Allman, 47.
Cher, 77, filed to be her son’s sole conservator late last year, but the bid for a temporary conservatorship was denied by a Los Angeles judge.
Now, it seems that Cher and her son have agreed to take the matter away from court and solve the issue privately.
The mother-son duo took part in a private meditation session on May 7, according to People.
At the session, they agreed to “pause all legal proceedings and related activities, including all discovery and motion practice, to allow the Parties to continue working together to privately and confidentially resolve this matter,” according to court documents obtained by the outlet.
Back in January, Cher’s proposal to become her son’s temporary conservator was denied.
The judge noted that Elijah “managed his finances,” had “an apartment,” and “he has remained drug-free,” thus making Cher’s wishes a “fear-based” proposal.
“That in and of itself is not a basis for the court to appoint a probate conservatorship. I have not seen the evidence to grant a temporary, emergency conservatorship as of today,” the judge ruled prior to Cher and Elijah’s move away from the courts.
A hearing initially set for June 11 has now been moved back to September 13 while Cher and her son are in mediation.
CHER’S FEARS
When Cher filed her case, the celebrity applied to become the sole conservator for her son’s estate in the light of “severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”
The star’s filing also revealed that Cher was concerned that Elijah would spend the money from his dad Gregg Allman‘s trust “on drugs.”
“Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from the Trust, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, [Cher] is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself and putting Elijah’s life at risk,” the document read.
In January, it was further reported that Elijah had seemingly gone missing.
Amid the troubling news, a source close to Cher explained that the star’s legal efforts were made out of love for her son.
“Cher is an amazing mother. In all the years I’ve known her, I’ve only seen her be the best, most amazing, giving mother,” the insider claimed.
Inside Cher’s conservatorship struggles
Cher has two children, but has shared a rocky relationship with her youngest son, Elijah Blue Allman.
Elijah’s drug problems began at an early age, with the musician admitting to experimenting with drugs when he was just 11.
“I mean it’s just what you did, it’s just what everybody did,” he said during a 2014 interview.
As he grew up, Elijah veered toward harder drugs, resulting in health crises and periods of not speaking with his mom.
Despite saying that he was sober in his 2014 interview, Cher became involved years later when she was accused of ‘kidnapping’ him to force him into treatment.
Elijah’s estranged wife, Marieangela King, claimed that Cher sent four men into Elijah’s hotel room to take him to rehab in Mexico.
Cher eventually filed for an emergency conservatorship over Elijah in 2023, on the basis of his ‘severe mental health and substance abuse issues.’
A judge ruled against the temporary conservatorship in January, with Cher agreeing to suspend her appeal after entering into mediation with her son on May 7.
A further hearing on the matter has been moved back from June 11 to September 13 of this year.
CLAPPING BACK
While Cher and Elijah now seem ready to figure out a way forward, Elijah previously slammed her intention to gain a conservatorship over him.
On social media, he suggested that the potential conservatorship would be an “imprisonment.”
In addition to Elijah’s comments, his estranged wife Marieangela King also spoke out about Cher’s legal action.
Marieangela previously accused Cher of kidnapping Elijah in 2022 order to take him to a lockdown rehab in Mexico.
“I have always been a champion for the sober community and for Elijah’s sobriety. … What I am not ok with are establishments that exclude me (his wife) from being part of Elijah’s treatment and hopeful recovery,” Marieangela said.
Elijah has been open about his historic drug use, admitting to taking heroin and painkillers back in 2014.
