Say what you will about Chappell Roan but you cannot deny she is an incredible talent with some serious pipes. I can always appreciate talent when I see/hear it and her latest cover of ‘Barracuda‘ is the closest thing we will get to a true Heart performance in the year 2025.
Ann Wilson would be proud!
Chappell Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, completely exploded onto the music scene seemingly out of nowhere over the last 18 months or so. ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ was her first song to crack the top-five of the US Billboard Hot 100. ‘Hot To Go’ and ‘Big Pony Club’ followed closely behind. All three songs are bangers. I was blown away to see her insane takeover lead Gen-Z to a massive victory over boomers at an NFL game last fall. She is everywhere!
All of this goes to say that Chappell Roan is a huge deal. But that’s not a secret by now considering that she won Best New Artist at the GRAMMYs. I digress.
From a personal perspective, I find Chappell Roan to be largely insufferable when she’s not on stage in terms of how she carries herself in the public eye. From a professional perspective, I find myself to be completely mesmerized every time she performs. Her stage presence and ability to control the crowd is up there with some of the all-time greats. Her music is captivating both sonically and lyrically.
That leads us to the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, where Chappell Roan performed a cover of the classic rock song ‘Barracuda’ by Heart. It was legitimately one of the best covers I’ve ever heard!
A lot of artists these days try to do too much with their covers. They try to make a song “their own.” Sometimes it hits. Usually, it misses.
Chappell Roan stuck to the original arrangement and totally rocked it out. If I was not familiar with the original, I would think it was her song to begin with. It was the closest thing we will get to a modern day Heart. (And shoutout to her lead guitar player for crushing the solo!)
I did not know this was a thing Chappell Roan does. She first performed her cover of ‘Barracuda’ last fall.
She played it again at ACL.
‘Barracuda’ also made an appearance at the Orange Warsaw Festival last month.
I was not familiar with her game! I’ll have to get to a show just to see Chappell Roan sing Barracuda.
