Raymond is a huge fan of sushi, and likes to have edamame as part of the meal. “Edamame has an outstanding nutrition profile,” says Torey Armul, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN. “I can’t think of many foods that low in calories and also that high in protein and fiber. As complete proteins, soybeans have all nine of the essential amino acids… It’s hard to mess up cooking them, and they’re delicious eaten hot, cold, or room temperature, as part of a dish, or alone. I love them thrown in a salad. It’s a great way to add protein. They’re very versatile and pick up a lot of different flavors. But edamame is also just a great snack on its own. I buy the frozen precooked beans. Just thaw them in the fridge or on the counter and enjoy.”

Raymond likes to incorporate big leafy salads with protein into her diet. “[Salad greens] provide fiber, which is beneficial in many areas, including cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health,” says Elisabeth Moore, a registered dietitian at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. “Greens are also low in calories, but high in nutrients and volume, which can be helpful if you’re trying to manage your weight.”

Raymond adores seafood, and will frequently indulge in lobster. “Shellfish are high-quality protein sources—just like land animals—meaning they have all the essential amino acids,” says Faye Dong, professor emerita of food science and human nutrition at the University of Illinois. Shellfish are also high in zinc, copper, and iron.

Whether it’s shrimp tempura or simply grilled in their shells, Raymond eats shrimp regularly. “Shrimp is a fabulous source of lean protein, and it can replace other protein sources that may not be as heart-healthy,” says Joan Salge Blake, EdD, RDN, a registered dietitian and clinical professor at Boston University. “We’re now asking Americans to have two seafood meals per week to potentially displace other meals that may not be as healthy.”

Raymond loves to eat poached eggs on avocado toast with smoked salmon on the side. “[Avocados are] packed with good fats and fiber, which means they help you stay full longer,” says Charlotte Roberts, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator with Cedars-Sinai. “They’re also a great source of vitamins… Some vitamins, like vitamin E, are especially good to get directly from food, since they don’t absorb as well when you take them as supplements.”
