Actresses Avery Kristen Pohl and Maura West of “General Hospital” chatted about the digital age.

On January 15, they participated in a virtual fan event, produced by Coastal Entertainment, which was well-attended and well-received.

Pohl revealed that she is having a blast playing her character Esme on “General Hospital.” She is honored to be surrounded by her veteran co-stars, many of which who have been on the show for decades.

“I just really think it’s a blessing,” Pohl said. “It’s very rare that you get to walk in a show and work with one star let alone 50 of them,” she said. “I’ve been working with a lot of them on a rotating basis. For a while, there were plenty of people that I didn’t get a chance to work with, but I’ve gotten the opportunity to with them recently.”

“I think it really is a gift, I’ve learned way more than I ever expected to learn in a year and a half,” she admitted. “The baseline of my capacity of an actor changed greatly, and I attribute that in so many ways to the people that I get to share the screen opposite of. In many ways, I think you are only as good as the weakest link on the show, but in our show, we don’t have any. There is always going to be a learning opportunity from everybody.”

The digital age

Emmy winner Maura West portrays Ava Jerome on the ABC daytime drama.

On being actresses in the digital age, Maura West said, “I think it’s great, I think there is more work for everybody. There are jobs everywhere in all of these streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, and they are all making their own original content. There is more jobs for all of the great actors. The more jobs for the good actors, the better.”

“Another huge thing is accessibility,” Pohl said. “Before, to find jobs you had to go to New York or Los Angeles or Atlanta or England, and you had to go in-person for auditions. These days, the accessibility of self-tapes has really changed the medium, and I think it has changed it for the better because people can live at home with their families and they can still go after jobs and what they want to do with their lives, and still follow responsibilities that keep them elsewhere.”

“I also think the digital age is great for the viewers,” Maura West added. “It allows viewers to watch the show at their convenience on Hulu and they can even watch clips on YouTube. The digital age has changed things for both the viewers and the actors. We have access to so many different programs. Right now, I am watching the show ‘Dark’ on Netflix, which is German, and it’s unbelievable.”
