In a bittersweet revelation, the curtain has been lifted on the cause of Norman Lear‘s departure from this world.

The creative genius, who left an indelible mark on the tapestry of entertainment, passed away on December 5. The star is remembered for his groundbreaking humor when tackling social issues and challenging cultural norms through his numerous movies and shows.

The late TV icon passed away from heart issues. Lear’s official cause of death was recorded as cardiac arrest, with congestive heart failure listed as an underlying factor. 

According to his death certificate, obtained by TMZ, the document also paid homage to Lear’s enduring dedication to his craft noting that he has a career spanning an impressive 80 years in the entertainment industry.

Lear passed away at the age of 101, marking the end of an era for television enthusiasts and cultural aficionados alike. At the time, his publicist revealed that he passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles home due to natural causes. 

As the news reverberated through the industry, the late screenwriter’s family issued a poignant statement requesting privacy as they grieved the loss of a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

The message began in part, “Thank you for the moving outpouring of love and support in honor of our wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.” 

The star’s grieving family continued, “Norman lived a life of creativity, tenacity, and empathy. He deeply loved our country and spent a lifetime helping to preserve its founding ideals of justice and equality for all. Knowing and loving him has been the greatest of gifts. We ask for your understanding as we mourn privately in celebration of this remarkable human being.”

Despite his immense public following, the family planned to hold a private memorial service, allowing them to celebrate Lear’s life away from the public eye.

The late father-of-six, born on July 27, 1922, in New Haven, Connecticut, had a journey of creativity and tenacity. In 2019, at the age of 97, he made history by becoming the oldest person to receive an Emmy Award for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ And ‘The Jeffersons.’”

Approaching his centennial milestone in 2022, Lear opened up about his joy and gratitude. Reflecting on his illustrious career, he expressed, “I’ve never chosen anything to do that I didn’t wish to do. My awards and accolades mean a great deal to me, but they don’t mean as much as the drive to the studio today. I still explode with joy, excitement, interest, and utter delight every time.” 

His 100th birthday became a family affair in Vermont, surrounded by his wife, six children, two sons-in-law, and four grandchildren.

Following the announcement of Lear’s passing, Hollywood came together to honor his life and enduring legacy. Actress Jennifer Aniston joined the chorus of tributes, offering heartfelt words that echoed the sentiments of the grieving industry. 

Aniston’s Instagram tribute was accompanied by two heartwarming photos capturing intimate moments with Lear. In one, the two embraced in a tight hug, while the second showed her gazing lovingly at the television pioneer, with her hand gently resting on his face. 

The “Friends” star poured her emotions into the caption, writing, “Norman Lear. His shows shaped my childhood, and getting to know him was one of my greatest honors. He made such a difference.” 

She highlighted Lear’s ability to navigate challenging political conversations through humor, emphasizing the importance of laughter as a source of healing.
