Our long national extra-dimensional Hell nightmare is over. After years of anticipation, speculation, and frustration, the MCU has finally confirmed that Mephisto exists in its cinematic universe. Potions witch Jennifer Kale made a direct reference to the nefarious demon during Agatha All Along‘s third episode. Now that we know the infamous Marvel Comics character is out there, we can ask new questions. Like where and when might we meet him? That is, if we haven’t already.
A deadly wine party briefly turned into an ominous warning during Agatha All Along‘s “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials.” Jennifer took a quick moment to warn Teen about Agatha. She said some believe Agatha traded her missing son Nicholas for the Book of the Damned. (A very possibility teased later in the episode when Agatha had a terriying vision of a baby bassinet.) When Jennifer cited the potential fates Nicholas encountered she said he might be dead, a demon, or even an agent of none other than Mephisto.
That single mention of Mephisto has been a longtime coming for many viewers. Throughout WandaVision viewers and sites like us were on a constant “Mephisto Watch,” as the comic character seemed like the best bet to be the show’s secret big bad. The Disney+ series encouraged that with constant Easter eggs and subtle references to him. Ultimately, though, the evil ancient being who rules the Hell dimension never appeared. He didn’t show up in Spider-Man 3 or Multiverse of Madness, either. No one in the MCU never even used his name…until now.
And he sounds as terrifying as we imagined, considering Jennifer made it sound as though ending up an agent of Mephisto is worse than dying or just being a regular demon.
Now that we know Mephisto exists in the MCU we can go back to wondering exactly when and how he’ll show up. Will it be on Agatha All Along? A second WandaVision season? A movie we’re not expecting?
Or is it possible Mephisto has already appeared in the MCU and we didn’t know it. “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.” Now that we know Mephisto does, we might find out he was here all along.
