The first trailer for 28 Years Later — a sequel to the acclaimed duo of post-apocalyptic zombie films, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later — has been released ahead of its Summer 2025 release. Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the film alongside Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes.
28 Years Later sees its key creative components return, as Oscar-nominated writer Alex Garland (whose also directed films such as Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War), returned to pen the script, while acclaimed Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, and Steve Jobs filmmaker Danny Boyle is back in the director’s chair.

“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
28 Years Later, hitting theaters on June 20, 2025, will star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. Cillian Murphy will also appear in the film, although based on the first look at his character from the original, he’s seen better days.

Excitingly, a direct sequel to 28 Years Later from Candyman director Nia DaCosta, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, was shot consecutively with Boyle’s film and is set to star Cillian Murphy, although it does not have an official release date.
In the 28 Weeks Later trailer, it certainly looks like the patently insane-looking Ralph Fiennes — who recently backed Murphy to play the role of Voldemort on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series — character is walking through said Bone Temple.
