Dana White and the UFC have hired controversial Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder to helm Brawler, a film about a fictional UFC fighter who rises from the streets of Los Angeles to the pros. While Snyder may split opinions among movie fans, he might be the perfect fit for a UFC film.

Zack Snyder is best known for directing movies such as Dawn of the Dead, 300, Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Most recently, Snyder directed a pair of Rebel Moon movies for Netflix, which were two of the worst-reviewed films of his career.

Snyder has been working in action for 20 years now and has become defined by what’s called a “hyper-masculine” style, perhaps making him the ideal director to take on a UFC project. In addition to directing, Snyder will also be co-writing the film and producing it.

Brawler will portray a young fighter rising from the rough streets of Los Angeles to get a shot at a UFC championship but having to battle his inner demons as he fights for redemption, according to a logline from the film’s producers.”

“Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there. UFC is the world leader in combat sports, and I’m honored to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story,” Snyder said in a statement. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

Since concluding his infamous run with Warner Bros. and DC, in which he directed Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and a complicated version of Justice League, Snyder has been at Netflix, where they’ve twice whiffed on building a franchise around one of his properties. In addition to the dismal response to his pair of Rebel Moon movies, further projects that would’ve centered around his middling Army of the Dead movies also seem to have fallen by the wayside.
