  • The Academy Awards have introduced an “Oscars Fan Favorite” category.
  • It allows fans to vote for their favorite movie on Twitter by using hashtags.
  • The resulting list is an extremely bizarre compilation of movies, ranging from Amazon’s awful Cinderella to Johnny Depp’s Minamata.

Viewership of the Academy Awards has been in free fall for half a decade now, if not longer.

Last year, for example, the televised award show drew 9.23 million viewers which represents a staggering 51% drop from the 18.69 million who tuned into the show back in 2020. For comparison, the 2010 Academy Awards racked up 42 million viewers. Given that trend, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if this year’s ceremony had even lower returns.

In an effort to change the tide, the Academy has introduced a “Oscars Fan Favorite” category which will attempt to integrate more popular films, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Suicide Squad, into the show.

Now, while a fan-driven category seems like a good idea on paper, the Academy failed to realize that people who spend tons of time on Twitter aren’t necessarily the most accurate portrait of larger movie culture, as the ten films that have qualified for the Oscars Fan Favorite category are quite bizarre, to say the least.

While entries such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dune are no brainers, underwhelming — and in the case of Cinderella, outright awful — nominees have effectively robbed the category of any legitimacy it hoped to capture. Check out the ten entrants below:

-Spider-Man: No Way Home
-Dune
-The Suicide Squad
-Army of the Dead
-Tick, Tick… Boom!
-Sing 2
-Cinderella
-The Power of the Dog
-Malignant
-Minamata

In case you do still maintain interest in the Oscars — seeing Will Smith or Benedict Cumberbatch take home the prize for Best Actor will at least be pretty cool — the 2022 Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 27.
