Diddy was 21 when he got his start in the music industry. Following approximately two years at Howard University, he dropped out of college and decided to become an intern at Uptown Records. It was 1990. While there, he was one of the people who made Jodeci and Mary J. Blige famous – he worked with them to develop them into the stars they are now. However, his foray into the musical world of rapping wouldn’t happen until 1993, when he formed Bad Boy Entertainment and a partnership with Arista. He brought an unknown rapper Christopher Wallace with him – you know him as Notorious BIG – and the label took off.

However, it would still be another few years before Diddy decided to get behind the mic. He took the name Puff Daddy – given to him as a child – and released ‘No Way Out in 1997. Can’t Nobody Stop Me sit on the charts for 28 weeks, and a star was born? His music was an instant success, and he could continue rapping. He signed many huge names to his label and began to make a place for himself in history.
Diddy Was Fired from Uptown Before Starting His Label
One thing we know about Diddy is that he’s no stranger to legal issues. We all remember when there was a shooting at a nightclub just days after Christmas that led to his arrest and the arrest of his famous girlfriend – Jennifer Lopez. It was huge news, ultimately one of the reasons their relationship ended. But did you know that Diddy was in trouble with Uptown Records after nine people were killed at a party?
Diddy spent more time in college throwing parties than anything else, and his parties were legendary. Rumor is he’d throw a party, and more than 1,000 people would attend. So, while he was working for Uptown, he threw a party. It was a fundraiser for AIDS, and he promoted the party along with Heavy D. However, the event was too crowded. Too many people were allowed in, and nine people were killed when the crowd essentially stampeded them. Uptown fired him, but his involvement wasn’t as prominent then as it would be now. He was not yet famous.

Combs had a bit of an issue when he was angry. As a child, he would huff and puff whenever he was angry. So his friends and family jokingly called him Puff, and it stuck. What is Diddy Doing Now?
Diddy does not spend nearly as much time in the limelight these days. He’s more of a behind-the-scenes guy these days. He’s still living his best life, but he’s also raising his kids, working on his multiple successful business ventures, and he’s supporting causes important to him as well as his friends. The famous rapper recently made headlines after speaking out about his Adidas boycott. His longtime friend Kanye West, Ye as he’s called now, has been vocal about Adidas and The Gap stealing his Yeezy designs. He alleges that the companies agreed to work with him on a line of Yeezys and then began leaving him out of meetings and plagiarizing his designs. Ye’s been posting on Instagram about it, and Diddy supports his friend. He shared his private message screenshots with Ye online.
