Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal, born in the Gyllenhaal family, has lived up to the family’s legacy. But there were times when he got overwhelmed while filming, and something similar happened during Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. He appeared in the role of Mysterio and heavily impacted the life of Tom Holland’s character, Peter Parker. The Oscar-nominated actor is known for going the extra mile for his roles.

He lost around 30 pounds for his role in Nightcrawler. However, after that, he decided not to get engrossed in a role further, and the primary reason for it might be his Oscar snub. He was not nominated for the Academy Awards for that part. On the personal front, Jake is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. The Dark Knight star Maggie Gyllenhaal is Jake’s sister, and the sibling duo shared the screen in Donnie Darko. Renowned Hollywood personalities Paul Newman and Jamie Lee Curtis are his godfather and godmother, respectively.

For the unversed, Jake Gyllenhaal was reportedly being eyed by Sony to replace Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2. Tobey was also going through a back injury and was dealing tough salary negotiations with the production house. But Jake went on record to say Tobey is Peter Parker, and he believes his not securing the part was for the best. Maybe not Spider-Man, but he appeared as a supervillain in the Sony-MCU-shared universe.

Jake Gyllenhaal played the role of Mysterio in 2019’s Far from Home. According to the comics, he was the founding member of the supervillain team Sinister Six. His actions led to the events of No Way Home in 2021. Jake appeared as Mysterio in the 2021 movie through archive footage. But playing the part was overwhelming for Gyllenhaal, as he once reflected on the experience in an interview with Howard Stern.

Sharing his experience of the first day of filming Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jake said, “It’s hard, man. That acting is hard. All of it. That world is enormous. And I joined that world way into that run, a train that was already moving. Normally, I come in way early on, and I get to figure it out.”

He recalled it was a scene with Samuel L Jackson and Tom Holland, and Gyllenhaal struggled with his lines. Jake revealed, “I was freaking out. I was the wooden board. And they were like, ‘Whoa.’ ” The Road House star mentioned how Tom helped him calm down.

Jake Gyllenhaal added, “I went up to Tom Holland and was like, ‘Dude, help me out.’ He’s like, ‘It’s all good, man. Just relax.’ It was like he was me in so many situations. And I finally did. I just put a lot of pressure on [myself] because I love that world.”

Spider-Man: Far From Home was released in the same year, and Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019. The movie, starring Tom, Jake, and Zendaya, earned $1.13 billion at the worldwide box office.

Like many, the comic world smites Jake Gyllenhaal as he recently revealed that playing Batman would be an honor for him. For the unversed, he auditioned for Bruce Wayne’s role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins but unfortunately didn’t get the part. It eventually went to Christian Bale.

On the professional front, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House is streaming on Prime Video. Check out our review of the movie here.
