Feeling lucky? Looking for an excuse to go to your local Topgolf again? If so, now might be the perfect time, because anyone who receives a gold-colored ball will receive a surprise gift.
Thanks to a promotion in partnership with Netflix, Topgolf says that, for the weekend of Aug. 1 through Aug. 3, guests who receive a golden ball will also receive a “Happy Gilmore 2” limited-edition Odyssey Hockey Stick putter and a tube sock headcover. The company notes in a press release that these were specifically created for the film.
If you’re interested in receiving the putter—which the Odyssey website prices at $499.99—the Topgolf press release says that each Topgolf location will only give out two putters. This means that, if no one or only one person at your location has won the putter, there’s a chance you can get one, too!
Has Anyone Actually Won the Putter?
The promotion technically launched for one day on July 27. There are already stories of people pulling the golden ball and winning one of the famed “Happy Gilmore” putters.
For example, TikTok user Jejo (@jejoh13) recently revealed that he is one of the proud recipients of a putter. According to Jejo, he was playing during his branch’s “$15 open to noon promotion.” That means he paid just $15 to win a $500 putter.
Immediately, commenters were jealous.
“Dude you’re so lucky, I tried for 2 hours until I had blisters bc I wanted that putter so badly. Congrats dude,” wrote a commenter.
“I want it SO bad. I don’t even golf. But I’d start for this,” added another.
However, some commenters were jealous not because they wanted to keep the putter for themselves, but because they wanted to flip it for a profit.
People Are Reselling the ‘Happy Gilmore’ Putters
On eBay, there are numerous listings for the “Happy Gilmore”-themed hockey stick putter, with many pricing the item at over $1,000.
According to Front Office Sports, this is actually slightly lower than they were before. At their peak, the putters were commanding over $3,000.
Why are so many people excited about the putter? It’s unclear, as even the company appears surprised by how popular the putter has been.
“There was a reasonably limited number that we thought would last us,” Callaway VP of global marketing Nick McInally explained to Front Office Sports. “Our aim was to be out of that stock by November. We were out of that stock by 10 a.m. on release day.”
Adam Sandler himself had a hand in the design of the putter, which may make the piece special to some fans. However, if one actually hoped to play with the putter in a professional tournament, they’ll have to settle for a different putter; author David Rumsey notes that the putter is not allowed in tournament play because both sides of its clubface are flat, which violates the rules of golf.
Still, it’s a fun piece of memorabilia for any Adam Sandler fan. So, if one is interested in owning one, they better head to Topgolf—or get ready to shell out a thousand dollars or more.
