Selena Gomez Producing Reboot of 1988’s ‘Working Girl’

Selena Gomez is engaged in “final negotiations” with 20th Century Studios to produce a revival of the 1988 comedy Working Girl, Deadline reports.

Ilana Peña, who served as creator and showrunner of the Disney+ series Diary of a Future President, has been tapped to adapt the screenplay. There’s no info yet on a director or whether Gomez is also starring in the remake about a secretary who assumes the role of her boss as he recovers from a broken leg.

The original film received six Oscar nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Mike Nichols, and Best Actress for Melanie Griffith. Joan Cusack and Sigourney Weaver were also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Aside from its Academy Awards recognition, Working Girl was a box office success, earning over $100 million domestically.

The Working Girl reboot appears likely to be headed to Hulu, the home of the mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building, which Gomez stars in and executive produces with Steve Martin and Martin Short. Both Martin and Short were recently nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at this year’s Emmys, but many—us included—were shocked to see Gomez left out.

Hulu announced last month that Only Murders in the Building was renewed for a third season. Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, said in a statement that he considers Only Murders to be “the true crown jewel of our slate.”
