Death Stranding is certainly a divisive game. Nevertheless, it is an important title for Sony. The company published the Kojima Productions project, after all. Kojima may be even more important to Sony than we had thought though. Resetera user Toumari (via VGC) noticed PlayStation Studios has updated its banner. The old one had Pixelopus’ Concrete Genie as part of the image. The latest one replaces it with Death Stranding. Following other recent acquisitions by Sony, the change is fueling speculation that PlayStation Studios may have acquired Kojima Productions.
Could Sony be acquiring Hideo Kojima’s studio? It is not out of the realm of possibility. In March, Kojima Productions moved out of its Tokyo office after five years, and no one knows where it has been relocated.
On top of that, Sony has been grabbing talent like Bungie, Haven, Bluepoint Games, and more — all within just one year. Jim Ryan, president of Sony, said PlayStation Studios is showing no signs of stopping acquisitions, recently telling Official PlayStation Podcast: “We’re growing our studios organically, and we’re growing through acquisition. We acquired five studios during the course of 2021, we’re in discussions with Bungie, and we have more planned. This is getting us into a virtuous cycle where success begets success.”
If these rumblings turn out to be true, it may affect Microsoft’s alleged plans to publish a new game with Kojima. This would suck, quite honestly, because I believe the more people have access to a game, the better it is for gamers as a whole.
