2023 was a great year for film overall; however, genre and franchise movies took a bit of a hit. IP films like Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie topped the box office. But the once stalwart MCU struggled and even Mission: Impossible 7 failed to crack the Top 10. Still, there were a lot of fun surprises along the way, like an unexpected Taylor Swift concert movie that grossed $250 million worldwide and a three-hour Christopher Nolan biopic nearing a billion. You never know where a movie year might take you. Luckily, 2024 movies are looking bright and will be a big year for our favorite franchises, from Dune to Mad Max. There are also some curious sequels, bold comic adaptations, and interesting horror entries on the way. Oh yeah, and Twisters.

Movies Coming Out in February 2024
Madame Web
January 2024 will be rather quiet in terms of movies that Nerdist loves. But we are curious about one February release. We can’t say the trailers for Madame Web inspire much faith. But hey, you never know when you’re in for a Venom-shaped surprise from Sony. Dakota Johnson leads this comic adaptation as the titular clairvoyant superhero, a side character in the Spider-Man universe.
The origin story co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim, with Adam Scott and Emma Roberts also making appearances. Will this be a comic movie worth the hype, or do we have a dud in the making? We will see if Madame Web makes our “top movies of 2024” list.

Movies Coming Out in March 2024
Dune: Part Two
We were supposed to get the Dune sequel in October 2023, before it was moved to November of that same year. Then, the SAG strike bumped it again, to March 2024. Luckily, it seems this date will stick. And boy, are we ready for it. The spice will flow and the worms will… worm… in this adaptation of the second half of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic. Timotheé Chalamet is back as Paul Atreides, along with most of the supporting cast from Part One and a few newbies. Namely Austin Butler as the villainous Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Christopher Walken as her father, the Padishah Emperor.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a charming return to the Ghostbusters universe, so it makes sense that we’re getting a sequel. Gil Kenan replaces Jason Reitman as director for this 2024 film. Details are scant, but we do have a brief teaser. And most of the cast from Afterlife are back, including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and McKenna Grace. Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt also star. Let’s hope this one moves a little farther from the nostalgia traps of the last one and finds its own footing.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
You thought Godzilla vs. Kong was epic? The monsters are reteaming for this sequel, from returning director Adam Wingard. And it appears that this time, the monsters are allies teaming up against a new threat. Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry return, alongside newcomer Dan Stevens. As long as we get big monsters bashing around cool setpieces, we can’t see how this could disappoint.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
George Miller returns to the Mad Max universe with this prequel to Fury Road. The first trailer lit up the internet when it debuted, sending us all into hype mode. Will Furiosa live up to the beauty of Fury Road? If anyone can outdo themselves, we trust Miller. Anya Taylor-Joy fills Charlize Theron’s shoes as the titular character, with Chris Hemsworth co-starring. Let’s hope it’s another lovely day!

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
The Planet of the Apes reboot films are one of the more underrated ongoing franchises. Hopefully we’re in for another treat with the latest, hitting theaters in early summer. Maze Runner director Wes Ball is at the wheel this time, along with a cast of mostly unknowns. We’ll see how this one fares now that Caesar, the heroic chimp from the first three films, is no longer around.

A Quiet Place: Day One
Stranger Things breakout Joseph Quinn pairs with Lupita Nyong’o, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, and Denis O’Hare in the latest Quiet Place film. This prequel will show us the early days of the alien invasion, which the first two films curiously (mostly) skipped over. John Krasinski isn’t writing and directing this time around, but he did conceive the story. Hopefully that means the silent, dread-inducing touchstones of the original will still be in place here.

Twisters
The 1996 action-adventure film Twister is an objectively ridiculous movie. But it’s a ridiculous movie we absolutely love. So we’re extra hyped for the latest Twister film, which is taking a page from the Alien franchise and going plural for round two. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung helms Twisters, plot details of which are currently unknown. It appears to be more of a reboot than a sequel. And it’s got a loaded cast, with Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, and Maura Tierney starring. We’re hoping for more storm-chasing action and maybe even an appearance from Dorothy.

Deadpool 3
Motor-mouthed Deadpool is back for his first film post-Disney merger. What will happen now that he’s o fficially in the MCU? Will his R-rated antics fit neatly into the more PG expanded universe? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing we do know is that Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine. However, we have no idea what that will look like either. But if there’s one comic character that feels like a safe bet now that Marvel is on thin ice, it’s Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. We bet Disney is counting their blessings that they have this on the roster.

Borderlands
The popular video game series Borderlands is finally making its way to the big screen, directed by horror guy Eli Roth and written by The Last of Us’ Craig Mazin. If that combo doesn’t seem whacky enough, take a look at the cast. Cate Blanchett? Jack Black? Jamie Lee Curtis? We can’t wait to see this long-awaited adaptation finally find its way to the screen, and with a mega A-list propping it up.

Alien: Romulus
The Alien franchise is one of horror and sci-fi’s best. The intricate lore, haunting creature design, and iconic characters like Ripley and David give it an elevation above others of its ilk. But Alien consistency can be hit or miss, especially when non-Ridley Scott directors step up to plate. That’s why we’ll have our eyes on Alien: Romulus. On one hand, it’s from Fede Álvarez, the director of modern horror classics like the Evil Dead remake and Don’t Breathe. On the other hand, Alien 3 showed that even master filmmakers like David Fincher can struggle in the Alien sandbox. But when xenomorphs are involved, you have our attention either way.

Kraven the Hunter
As with Madame Web, it’s hard to tell if Kraven the Hunter will be big fun or a big flop. The trailer makes it look pretty unserious. But again—Venom looked like a disaster, and instead turned out to be pretty fun. So who knows! Another film set in the Sony Spider-verse, this one is a villain origin story starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the eponymous warrior.

Beetlejuice 2
The first time Jenna Ortega teamed up with Tim Burton, they created the mega Netflix hit Wednesday. Now, Ortega joins the Beetlejuice family as the daughter of Lydia Deetz, played by a returning Winona Ryder. Michael Keaton also returns as the titular poltergeist, and Catherine O’Hara is back as Lydia’s kooky stepmother Delia. We don’t know the exact premise just yet, but does it really matter? It’s Beetlejuice! One of the most iconic horror-comedy characters of all time! We’re ready to say his name three times so we can see this as soon as possible.

Joker: Folie à Deux
When word got out that Todd Phillips’ sequel to his Oscar-winning Joker was a musical, many internet skeptics rolled their eyes. Were they right to be cynical, or are we in for a sweet treat? It’s hard to say, but with Joaquin Phoenix back in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, we’re in for something interesting at the very least.

Movies Coming Out in November 2024
Gladiator 2
This one is here with an asterisk, because it seems likely to get pushed. The SAG strike delayed filming from July to December of 2023, so less than a year turnaround seems quick. Then again, never bet against Ridley Scott, the hardest-working 86-year-old director in the game. This sequel to the Best Picture-winning behemoth stars a murderers’ row of internet boyfriends, including Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Pedro Pascal. Oh yeah, and a little someone by the name of Denzel Washington. We have no idea what to expect with this return to the Roman Empire, although it will allegedly follow an adult Lucius, played by Mescal.

Wicked: Part 1
While we’re still not certain breaking this film into two parts was a great idea, there’s no denying the hype-meter for this long-awaited Broadway adaptation. Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glidna, a.k.a. The Good Witch of the North, in this Wizard of Oz musical prequel. The Oz origin story has been delighting audiences on the Great White Way for 20 years, so it’s about time it lights up the movie screen, too. Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is set to take us on this two-part journey—let’s just hope the split is worth it, or we’re in for an awkward 2025.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
The third Sonic the Hedgehog film rolls its way into theaters in winter 2024. And what a ride it’s been so far! Who would have thought a movie that suffered early criticism for weird CGI teeth (that were later corrected) would kickstart an almost billion-dollar franchise? Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of the beloved Sega character. We don’t know much about the story just yet, but we do know that Sonic rival Shadow the Hedgehog will be there, as an early teaser showed.
