For decades there has been an urban legend that claims a gold train, AKA the Walbrzych gold train, was hidden somewhere by the Nazis during the final days of World War II. The Nazi gold train was supposedly filled with gold, artwork, jewels, weapons, and other treasures and was hidden in a sealed-up rail tunnel or mine somewhere in southwest Poland.
Among the treasures that are supposedly on the Nazi gold train are items from the Amber Room of the Czars, which was once considered to be the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Located in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg, Russia, the Amber Room was looted during World War II by the Army Group North of Nazi Germany and taken to Konigsberg for reconstruction and display. It was disassembled and disappeared during World War II and its contents have never been found.
Numerous people have gone off in search of this fabled Nazi gold train over the years, including the Polish Army, but no sign of it has ever been uncovered. Several historians have also gone on record claiming that the train never actually existed in the first place.
That, however, has not stopped treasure hunters from continuing to search for the Nazi gold train. One such treasure hunter, who is currently remaining anonymous, recently sent a detailed letter to Polish authorities claiming he found the “camouflaged train carriages” in a tunnel near the city of Walbrzych.
“Three railway wagons from the period of World War II, are hidden in a camouflaged tunnel,” DailyMail.com reports the letter claims. “Each wagon is approximately 12 meters long, four meters wide and four meters high. The wagons are hidden behind a closed, sliding steel gate at the entrance to the tunnel.”
The letter also claims, “The wagons contain valuable precious metals, including gold. Precise geodetic data will be made available to the mayor of Walbrzych or his deputy in the form of attachments.”
The Sun also reports that spokesperson for the mayor of Walbrzych, Kamila Swierczynska, revealed, “A certain man, whose details I cannot disclose, made a procedural report of the discovery, referred to by the press as the gold train. The letter looks factual and specific. The letter indicates four attachments, such as a tunnel with a train inside.
She also revealed that the letter contains a “table with geodetic data, terrain profile, including the tunnel layout, a map with track simulation and tunnel course, and account of a witness who lived in Walbrzych during the war.”
A local media outlet in Poland also reported that Anna Nowakowska, head of the Walbrzych branch of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments, stated, “He was informed about what permit are required in such cases, during both invasive and non-invasive searches. After analyzing various sources and documents, the man came to the conclusion that he had located a tunnel with the so-called golden train inside.” She also said this is the third location since 2018 that has been brought to their attention as a location of interest.
