In episode four of Suits LA, the beloved by fans and hated by his enemies super-lawyer Harvey Specter made his first appearance in the series. We knew that he had a connection to Ted Black in the past, including playing baseball together, and this episode gave us a look back to the early days of their relationship. But this episode gives us more insight into how their relationship became something deeper in the vein of Batman and Robin before Mike Ross came into the picture.
Back in NYC in 2010, mobster Pelligrini shows up at the diner where his brother Eddie works, which is an intimidation tactic that makes Ted angry. Ted puts on a brave face as he stands up to Pelligrini but like any normal human being, he’s nervous about this move. The riskiness of Ted’s job combined with her own job offer in LA is what eventually led Samantha to leave the city. They have a conversation about it right before he heads off to his baseball game. This is where Harvey Specter’s brilliance comes into play in Suits LA.
They are on the same team in the prosecutor’s league, with Harvey as the shortstop and Ted as the pitcher. Ted is off his game and Harvey comes up to him to ask what’s going on. They have clever banter about who is actually closer to Batman before Ted tells Harvey about what Pelligrini did recently. Harvey tells him to get that out of his head so they can make the playoffs. He says they can have drinks and chat further later. At the bar, Ted orders Guinness for the two of them and says Eddie can get what he wants. But, of course, Harvey is too fancy for that.
At this time, he’s a junior partner at Pearson Hardman so he’s making some money. He orders three Macallan 25 drinks, which Eddie hilariously hates. Eddie leaves and they are able to have a frank conversation. Harvey gives him information from the DA that Pelligrini has a shady connection in Ted’s office. However, he doesn’t think Pelligrini will go directly after Ted. Oh and he also confirms that he is indeed Batman, which I agree with. I cannot believe the writers didn’t plug in an Arrow reference. We learn that Harvey left the DA five years prior in 2005, which tracks with his story set in Suits.
This flashback continues to flesh out what happened with Ted in the past. Based on his conversations with his ex Samantha, we will see how those things haunt him in the present day. Harvey Specter will be in two more episodes that will bring him to LA, so let’s see how these two timelines continue to bleed into each other.
