Robert Downey Jr bags the BAFTA Awards 2024 in the category of best supporting actor for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus Oppenheimer. The actor got a new life professionally after featuring as Marvel’s Iron Man, aka Tony Stark. While giving his acceptance speech, the actor allegedly took a jibe at his Marvel career by calling it his ‘dwindling credibility.’ Keep scrolling for more.

RDJ is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood thanks to his Tony Stark act in the MCU. He appeared in the role for the first time in 2008, and in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame, he parted ways with the highest-grossing franchise. He did Dolittle after that, but it suffered a tragic fate at the box office. He was the face of the MCU, and people still demand his return in future projects.

On February 18, the BAFTA Awards 2024 took place, where the Oppenheimer trio of Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr took home the night’s most significant awards. RDJ is known for his charming persona, and while giving his acceptance speech, the actor joked about his Marvel career and said I played a guy named Tony in the MCU for about 12 years. And then recently, that dude, Chris Nolan, suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to resurrect my dwindling credibility.”

Before that, he said, “When I was 15, I wanted to be Peter O’Toole. When I was 25, I worked for Richard Attenborough and Anthony Hopkins. When I was 35, I finally understood why Dickie thought Tony would be a better role model for me than Peter. When I was 42, I did two films for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a civil British fare.”

Robert Downey Jr also thanked his wife, Susan, his co-star Cillian Murphy, the film’s cast and crew, Universal WME, and the ‘British influence. RDJ was nominated in the category with Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Dominic Sessa.

RDJ passed the dwindling credibility and Marvel statement jokingly, but some internet users did not enjoy the sarcasm as they dissed him on Twitter.

One person wrote, “Ngl I feel likes he’s starting to speak down on the Tony Stark role a bit to much.”

Another added, “Bruh why he hatin on the MCU now.”

A user explained, “‘Dwindling credibility?’ C’mon man, no one ever doubted RDJ’s acting while in the MCU. I can understand he didn’t want to be just Tony his entire life, but Tony Stark made RDJ into a household name and boosted his career.”

“Very weird that he sees the film series that resurrected his career as negatively impacting his credibility,” wrote one user.

A person said, “Bro really dislikes Tony Stark.”

And “Blame Doolittle not marvel.”

However, some fans passed assuring comments that Robert Downey Jr’s acting credibility was never dwindling.

One fan wrote, “Dwindling credibility?? RDJ, you are and always will be incredible.”

“He was never dwindling, always GOAT,” said one.

Another explained, “The amount of people here not realizing it was a tongue in cheek sarcastic remark is unbelievable.”
