Aaron Carter‘s unfortunate passing has inspired his on-again, off-again fiancee, Melanie Martin, to study more about the afterlife.

Life had drastically changed for the former bartender when she reportedly found him in a bathtub in his California home on November 5, 2022. The pair shared a one-year-old son, Prince, and made several headlines over the years thanks to their tumultuous relationship.

Martin shared a screenshot of Michael Newton’s “Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives” to her Instagram Story. The snap was accompanied by the words, “When my friend opened this page, it said nothing about a butterfly.”

To prove her point, the dog owner uploaded a second screenshot of the same book, which came with a Rabindranath Tagore quote that read, “The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.”

It would appear that Martin was looking for answers about what happens after death in the book that details what death feels like, the purpose of life, and how to recognize soulmates.

Since Carter’s death, Martin has had to deal with raising their son and his grief, thus making it understandable that she is searching for answers outside herself and her experience. Another challenge the mother-of-one has to deal with is the absence of a Carter will.

The Blast shared that the pop star passed away without making a legal will, leaving his assets in the care of the State of California. Simply put, the state authority has all the power to determine the party that would inherit the “I Want Candy” singer’s possessions.

Even though his attorney had reportedly advised him to compose a will, he did not heed the advice. The artist’s lawyer had reiterated the idea when the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services stepped in during one of Carter and his partner’s many issues. Unfortunately, the 34-year-old never got around to it, leading Prince to move to his mother’s house in September.

As it stands, the one-year-old is first in line to inherit most —if not all — of his father’s property. That would happen due to California’s intestate succession law, which states that when an unmarried person with a child dies without a will, the kid will be given the parent’s assets. It remains to be seen just how much Carter had to his name, as reports claim he was not financially stable at the time of his passing.

Family Is The Most Important Structure For Martin

Regardless of the drama that occurred during most of their relationship, Carter and Martin seemed determined to work for a better future. To that end, the tumultuous couple signed up for therapy sessions that would aid them in meeting their goals. They told The Blast in May:

“We decided that we want to be a family and love each other and treat each other with kindness and learn tools that can help us grow as a strong couple.”

Martin emphasized that they were taking the personal growth sessions “day by day” and that she noticed that the people they were working with were “very beneficial to our future just as long as we apply what we’re being given.”

Before making that choice, Martin had accused her late beau of assault, later claiming that her postpartum depression triggered the allegations. The duo was also trying to avoid seeing their relationship drama playing out in public like it always had. In her words:

“It’s obviously been very trying and public, and we’re going to keep our relationship a lot more private and sacred.”

Most importantly, the doting mom was determined to enjoy her family, noting, “Family is like a beautiful glass ball that’s super fragile in our hands, and if it’s dropped, those pieces cannot be put back together without hard work and growing, and learning and dedication and true love, and I know how deeply I love Aaron and I will make this right.”

The two first became social media official in January 2020, dating on and off again in the following years — with Carter proposing to Martin and the couple welcoming a son together. They officially ended things in February 2022 before reconciling for therapy.
