Emmy award-winning actor Chad Duell (“General Hospital” fame) chatted about his career in the entertainment industry, fatherhood, and his latest endeavors.
‘Soldiers of Heaven’ movie
Duell is being considered for a lead role in “Soldiers of Heaven,” which is director Bruce Reisman’s next feature project. This is a World War II action drama, and it is based on a true story.
Duell on director Bruce Reisman
On getting the opportunity to work with Bruce Reisman, Duell exclaimed, “Bruce is awesome! He is a really cool and down-to-earth director. He is a kind-hearted person, and I am lucky to be working with him on projects.”
‘Yum Yum at Annapolis’ theatrical play
Duell is workshopping the play “Yum Yum at Annapolis,” which is a two-character play. “Bruce is in the middle of re-writing this play,” Duell said. “We did a table read for it, and that’s a work in progress right now.”
“I haven’t done a legit play since I was in high school in Scottsdale, Arizona,” he said. “This is a freeing, artistic experience that you don’t get from doing film and television.”
‘The Bay’
On being a part of the Emmy award-winning series “The Bay,” Duell recalled, “I did ‘The Bay’ a while back. That was back in late 2016. Adam was a cool character that I got to play because he was a dark character.”
“That character went through a lot of different dynamics. That was fun to work on because of its dark, creepy, and sadistic nature,” he added.
Speaking of his acting work in “The Bay,” Duell earned a 2018 Emmy nomination for
“Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series.”
Maurice Benard’s ‘State of Mind’ podcast
Duell was privileged to be a part of Maurice Benard’s “State of Mind” podcast (pertaining to mental health) on multiple occasions.
“I think I broke the record for being on there the most. That was cool,” Duell admitted.
“We just talk in general; I don’t acknowledge the cameras that were there. I would love to do another episode with him down the line,” Duell noted.
“Maurice is the best. He is a genuine and kind person. I like him a lot,” Duell acknowledged. “I really love doing his show. It is very relaxing, and I feel I can go on for hours.”
Mental health significance in the digital age
Duell underscored the importance of mental health, especially in this digital age.
“Mental health is a universal thing,” he noted. “No matter how big or how small you think you are, we are all human, and we all have those shared concerns. We are all connected in regardless of stature.”
Duell on his Emmy Award win
Duell won the 2015 Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series” for his acting in “General Hospital.”
“I like my work there. You just never know,” he admitted. “I’ve been nominated a total of seven times for Emmy Awards, and I got one win in there. It was good and I liked my work.”
“You never know how the voting process works. It is always nice to come out with an Emmy victory. That’s a good memory that I will always have,” he elaborated.
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and emerging actors, he said, “These days, acting is a very different medium that it was a while back. You have to bring your authenticity into everything you do.”
Duell continued, “Don’t try to put yourself in a box of what they want you to be. What makes each person unique is their personality, so find a way to marry your personality (what makes you unique) with whatever role you are asked to audition for or play, and that is going to make you stand out.”
Stage of his life
On the title of the current chapter of his life, he revealed, “Renewed Flame.” “That is where I’m going,” he admitted.
Duell on fatherhood
In his personal life, he and his girlfriend have a baby named Dawson. “
“The baby is doing good,” he said. His personality is really coming through and it is crazy how quick he grows as a human being.”
“I am looking forward to seeing him grow more and getting him involved in sports. I will get him in MMA and jiu-jitsu as soon as I can. I am looking forward to that,” he added.
Duell remembers Johnny Wactor
Duell took the time to remember his late “General Hospital” co-star and good friend Johnny Wactor, who was killed tragically in Downtown Los Angeles on May 25, 2024, due to an attempted catalytic converter theft incident.
“Johnny was a great man and a great dude. He was always a genuine person,” Duell said.
“That was a big loss to everyone that was around him. He was a really good human and he left behind a beautiful legacy, especially being kind and a really good person,” Duell expressed.
Success
On his definition of the word success, Duell said, “Peace of mind.”
Message for his fans and supporters
For his fans and supporters, Duell stated, “Thank you for all of the support over the years, genuinely. Sorry that I’ve been in the dark about everything. It has been an amazing journey for me. I grew in a lot of ways. Thank you for rooting for me along the way; it has been great.”
“I hope these new projects with Bruce Reisman allow the fans to see me in a new light that they haven’t seen me before. I think the fans will enjoy seeing me in this new light,” he noted.
“Thank you for being a part of my journey there, and I hope you keep on following me every step of the way going forward,” Duell concluded.
