“I don’t have a trainer, and I don’t really go to the gym,” Emily confessed to The New York Times. “I’m just not a crazy fitness person. I’m definitely an outlier in the industry,” she added. “And doing yoga a couple of times a week is a really big part of my regimen.”
Emily tries to be authentic. “I think the biggest obstacle of my career has been transitioning and doing things that people didn’t really expect,” she explained to Harper’s Bazaar. “But I think you just have to forge ahead and do what you’re going to do and be who you are.”
Emily prioritizes self-care “For me, the way I sleep afterwards is one of the main reasons to work out. I am always on my phone working and I think that’s affected my sleep. I’m also really light-sensitive. When I work out, it’s better than taking a melatonin. Because my body has worked hard, my brain finally rests and I think that is so valuable in this day and age — not to sound like an old geezer, but truly I feel that way,” she told InStyle.
Emily also enjoys outdoor exercise. “I go on long walks and hikes with my girlfriends,” she told the New York Times. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer in terms of exercise, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day led to a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.
“I’m one of those people who, if I go to the gym by myself, there’s a 50/50 chance of me actually working out and really pushing myself, so the class environment works really, really well for me,” Emily told InStyle. “I am also someone who, even in a class, will get chatty and [distracted]. I think that’s the great thing about STRONG — the music keeps me really focused and in the zone,” she continues. “You just feel like you’re, you know, Superwoman really pushing herself. You end up working harder and it’s a better, more intense workout, without even noticing.”
Emily recently revealed on the “High Low” podcast that she is a fan of thearpy. “I’ve been in therapy for quite a long time,” she said. “For me, it was really in therapy where I learned to be independent and get to the root of my fear of abandonment.”
Tina Kunakey, one of Emily’s pals and her travel buddy in Turks, loves to surf. You can often find her surfing with her husband, Vincent Kassel. Surfing, According to the Australian government’s Better Health, surfing provides many health benefits including cardiovascular fitness from paddling, shoulder and back strength, which also strengthens from the paddling, and leg and core strength. “Once you’re standing up on the board, strong legs and a strong core will keep you up,” they say.
Emrata’s best friend, Babs Jeanne, is no stranger to vacations with the actress-slash-model. During a recent trip to Capri, the two went jet skiing together. According to Health Fitness Revolution, the average 150-pound rider will burn a surprising 238 calories during a half-hour ride. The sport is also great for cardiovascular endurance.
Olivia Wilde was friends with Emily – until the model was caught smooching Olivia’s ex, Harry Styles, according to reports. According to Olivia “it’s all about balance,” when it comes to health. “I think anyone who’s ever had even a small period of their life where they clean up their act — first begin to eat healthy food and exercise and use natural products — they’ll always say … I feel my best. But sometimes it’s hard to sustain that lifestyle. You know it’s tricky for anybody to stay totally clean,” she told CNBC Make It.
Emily has gotten close to Julia Fox, hosting Kanye’s ex on her podcast. Julia’s wellness secret is simply prioritizing self-care. “Today, self-care is just taking a pause and checking in with myself, asking myself how I’m feeling instead of suppressing,” she told High Snobbery.
Emily and Amy Schumer have been pals ever since they starred together in the movie I Feel Pretty. According to her trainer, Harley Pasternak, Amy works hard at the gym. “Amy lives by the idea ‘strong in the gym, lean in life.’ She keeps her workout with us super brief and stays active through the rest of the day,” he told Popsugar. He added to Health that “Amy’s naturally an athlete, noting that she played sports in high school and college and was even an aerobics instructor. “So she’s very coordinated, and easy to push in the gym,” he said.
Emily is also friends with fellow model, Irina Shayk. “I work out a lot. I do boxing, Shayk told People. “I hate traditional cardio. Running is my worst nightmare, so I’ve had to find something I enjoy that gets me all the calorie-burning benefits of cardio without boring me to death,” she added to Women’s Health.
Another model pal of Emily’s? Gigi Hadid. Gigi suffers from the autoimmune disorder Hashimoto’s disease, which impacts her thyroid and causes fatigue. This means rest is essential. “I’m usually taking a nap during my lunch breaks, and I will eat my lunch when I’m retouching hair and makeup after. It’s just something that I’ve had to deal with over the years. Sometimes it’s better than other times,” she told Elle. “One of the boundaries I have is that I have to tell my team when I need rest. They’ve always been understanding and encouraging of that, and then besides that, I think I’ve just learned to make it work for me, and what helps me get through the day and do my best.”
Emily has shared photos of herself partying with Dua Lipa. “I also love to do yoga,” the singer told Refinery29 in 2021. She “always, always” travels with a yoga mat, she revealed during a 73 Questions interview with Vogue. There is a laundry list of reasons to do yoga, explains Harvard Health. “Researchers found that people who practiced yoga for at least 30 minutes once a week for at least four years, gained less weight during middle adulthood,” they said. “People who were overweight actually lost weight. Overall, those who practiced yoga had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) compared with those who did not practice yoga. Researchers attributed this to mindfulness. Mindful eating can lead to a more positive relationship with food and eating.”
Emily is also friends with Gigi’s sister, Bella Hadid. “I’ve always had a difficult relationship with food. In high school, my relationship with food came from not having control, but food was the one thing I could control. So I would micromanage and make schedules for food, but it’s more important to check what’s good for your body and your own biology,” Bella confessed to Harper’s Bazaar. Her diet is mostly healthy but she does allow herself to indulge. “My favorite go-to snack, I eat pizza, at least once a day. It’s always like a go-to cuz it always, you know, it tastes good every time,” she added to ID. “There’s no bad pizza. Also seaweed snacks randomly. Oh, sour Patch Kids and Rose Champagne if i’m feeling frisky.”
