Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird Take Flight on New York's Pier 17 (A Gallery)

On Friday, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird descended upon the elevated outdoor stage at New York’s Pier 17. In the fall, the two musicians came together in Yosemite for a pair of performances that brought support to the country’s beautiful national parks, and the collaboration resulted in their ongoing Outside Problems tour.

In a statement announcing the tour, Bird wrote of meeting performing with Iron & Wine, who is also known as Sam Beam. “I’m not sure why it took so long for me to meet Sam Beam,” he shared. “His music I have known and admired for many years now. What a lovely guy. The kind of guy that would help you move.”

Before Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird performed their sets, German-born American singer-songwriter, rapper, and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello warmed up the crowd, surrounded by highrise buildings and long cascading cables of New York’s iconic bridges. After the two singer songwriter’s individual sets, they shared the stage to close out the evening.
