Shutterstock has acquired Pond5, the world’s largest video marketplace, for $210 million. The acquisition cements the company’s position as the industry leader for commercial and editorial video content.

Shutterstock is the world’s leading creative platform for brands and media companies. Today the company announced its acquisition of Pond5, the global leading royalty-free video marketplace, boasting customers like Netflix, Disney, BBC, and NBC. Its expansive collection includes 1.6 million licensable music tracks, 30 million video clips, and 1.7 million sound effects.

Integrated with Shutterstock, the content library enables creators access to more assets than ever while granting Pond5’s contributors a more comprehensive distribution range. Pond5’s assets appear throughout the cultural zeitgeist in films and television, including Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, HBO’s Succession, video games, Super Bowl ads, and YouTube videos.

“We could not be more thrilled to join forces with Shutterstock to lead the video and music space,” Pond5 CEO Tom Crary said. “Our combined editorial offerings will be a competitive force in the market, and offer additional choice to customers with highly exclusive editorial video content.”

“With this acquisition, we are able to offer our customers across global agency, corporate, and media channels access to one of the largest premium archival collections in the industry,” said Jamie Elden, Shutterstock Chief Revenue Officer. “Shutterstock is constantly reinventing, and this acquisition brings together powerful creators and exceptional content to ensure our customers have world class video, music, and editorial collections at their fingertips.”

Jon Oringer, Interim CEO at Shutterstock, added, “The acquisition of Pond5 provides immense value for our global customer base, with unparalleled access to one of the largest collections of editorial and commercial video content in the world. Our contributors will also benefit from having their work showcased on Pond5’s platform, expanding their portfolio to new customers.”

Shutterstock’s other platforms include PremiumBeat, a subscription-based royalty-free music library, and Amper Music, an AI-driven music-generating platform. The company also owns the graphic design platform PicMonkey, 3D content marketplace TurboSquid, and image platforms Offset and Bigstock.

Created in 2006, Pond5 has an expanding network of over 115,000 active contributors, uploading over 2.5 million assets per month. Its editorial partners include Reuters, PA Media, and British Movietone.
