Rockers Honor Kurt Cobain on 30th Anniversary of His Death

Legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died on April 5th, 1994, at the way-too-young age of 27. Thirty years after his tragic death, the rock icon’s influence remains as impactful as ever.

To mark the 30th anniversary of his passing, Heavy Consequence asked a number of musicians to reflect on Cobain’s music and legacy. Instead of dwelling on Cobain’s tragic last days, most of the musicians we spoke with chose to celebrate his groundbreaking impact on the rock scene.

The artists who paid tribute to Cobain in the video above include Sully Erna (Godsmack), P-Nut (311), Donita Sparks (L7), Jami Morgan (Code Orange), Winston McCall (Parkway Drive), and Joakim “Jolly” Karlsson (Bad Omens).

Erna told us, “It was very obvious to me from the first time I heard it that it was such a unique music, and it was gonna change the world.”

Sparks recalled, “We were really good friends with Nirvana, and we saw their ascension, and were very excited for them. I would say Kurt’s passion as a singer was very effective, and their songs were great, and I also liked that he had a lot of melody in his material.”

P-Nut remarked, “Playing Kurt’s music for my kids now … as I wipe away tears playing those songs for them, I can see it mean a lot to them, too, ’cause it’s such brilliant songwriting.”
