With Pearl Jam’s Dark Matter now out in the world, we’re pulling a pair of interviews with guitarist Mike McCready out of the vault. Listen to both above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Rewinding to the year 2012, McCready dug into his side projects, from his UFO tribute band Flight to Mars to The Rockfords to his pre-Pearl Jam band Shadow. The guitarists talked about how he took from (and continues to take from) bands like Kiss, Van Halen and Aerosmith. Then came the big news (at that time): the announcement that he would be celebrating Mad Season, his one-off band with Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley, with a deluxe edition reissue.
Going forward a year, the 2013 interview picks up where 2012’s left off, with Mad Season. McCready tells the story on how they recorded three songs with Mark Lanegan and another pair with Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman. McCready then gets into the dark period of making the record and how he attempted to help Staley get clean of his addictions. When it’s pointed out that McCready has played with nearly all of the most famous of Seattle singers, he reflects on the brief moment that he tried to start a project with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain.
