Fallout stars Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten join The Spark Parade to discuss how their own work as actors is inspired by musicians performing the music of other songwriters. Listen to the new episode above or wherever you get your podcasts.
As actors, Purnell and Moten are effectively cover artists, finding ways to put their personal stamp on other people’s words and stories. That idea is doubly true for Fallout, an adaptation of the hit video game series. The pair understand the power of artistic re-interpretation, so when it comes to their respective ‘sparks,’ both actors chose songs performed by someone other than who originally wrote the piece. Purnell gravitated towards Brandi Carlile’s breakout hit “The Story,” which was originally recorded by members of her band, while Moten picked Glenn Gould’s recording of the “Goldberg Variations,” which was originally penned by, well, Johann Sebastian Bach.
The two discuss being susceptible to the emotions baked into the music they love, with Purnell even admitting to using it as an acting tool when she needs to cry on camera. “Some real actors who went to Juilliard — like Aaron Moten next door — they might be able to switch it on, switch it off, and cry on demand,” she explains. “I can’t do that. I find it really difficult, [but ‘The Story’] makes me cry.”
