BLACKPINK’s Jennie joins The Weeknd’s HBO series “The Idol.”

Jennie Kim of the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK will appear in The Weeknd’s upcoming HBO series “The Idol.” The show is co-created by The Weeknd, Sam Levinson of “Euphoria” fame, Reza Fahim, and co-stars Lily-Rose Depp. “The Idol” takes shape amidst a seedy music industry motif, following a self-help guru turned cult leader who forms a complicated relationship with an emerging pop idol.

HBO confirmed Jennie’s participation in “The Idol” on Twitter, though we’ve yet to receive a release date.

“I found the script very intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the series,” Jennie said in a statement published by Korean news source Yonhap. “I feel very excited. I’ll work hard, so please watch me with affection.”

K-pop fans are excited about the announcement, to whom many “The Idol” will be considered Jennie’s first “legitimate” acting debut. Her previous acting credits include “Castle Einstein,” “The Clash,” “BLACKPINK: The Movie” on Netflix, and the long-running YouTube series “BLACKPINK.”

Born in Korea, Jennie Kim lived and studied in Auckland, New Zealand, for five years before returning to Korea. She joined YG’s talent academy, forming the four-member group BLACKPINK in 2016.

BLACKPINK is the first music group to have five videos on YouTube that accumulated over a billion views each. They are the most-followed girl group on Spotify.

YG Entertainment recently announced that BLACKPINK is in the final stages of recording a new album, due to drop in August. The album will be their second full-length release and harkens the start of a “continuous large-scale project which will extend through the second half of the year.”

YG says, “A lot of BLACKPINK-esque music has been prepared over a long period of time. On top of new music and large-scale projects, BLACKPINK will also go on the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group by the end of the year to expand their rapport with fans worldwide.”
