Who were the original members of the Dixie Chicks?

Initially starting in 1989, The Dixie Chicks music band started with four women who came together in Texas. They initially specialized in bluegrass and Western swing music.

The group started with Laura Lynch, middle school math teacher Robin Lynn Macy, and the Erwin sisters Martie (Maguire) and Emily (Strayer).

A year after they were formed, the band released their first independent studio album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans in 1990. After this, they opted to evolve into a slightly more modern country band.

After Macy retired from the band, they released their second Independent album, Little Ol’ Cowgirl in 1992.

Natalie Maines joined the group in 1995 after frontwoman Laura Lynch left the group.

When did they become The Chicks?

In 2017, The Dixie Chicks shared the original inspiration for their band name. Their Twitter post reads: “Fun Fact: the Dixie Chicks name came to be because of this song!”

Three years later, the band officially removed “Dixie” from its name, opting to go by the name The Chicks.

The change was reportedly done to distance itself from the name that has ties to the Confederate-era South.

The day the change of name was made, their website stated: “We want to meet this moment.”
