No Doubt are reuniting.
On Tuesday, January 16th, the band’s official Twitter page shared a video confirming that the classic four-piece lineup — featuring Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young — will play together once again, with the quartet all agreeing to “do a show.” More details have yet to be announced. Update: It’s been confirmed that the band will perform at Coachella 2024.
The minute-long video begins with Stefani showing off collage artwork she made for the band’s second album, The Beacon Street Collection. After reminiscing on those times — feeling “so nostalgic” — she tells the camera that she’s “gonna text Tony [Kanal] right now.” We then see her iPhone text screen as she coordinates a video call with Kanal and “the guys.”
Cutting to the video call, all four members of the band’s classic lineup are there. After a bit of “Woah,” “What’s up?” “How are you?” and comical cartoon sound effects, Stefani asks the band: “What are we doing? Why do we not hang out?” Kanal responds “We should hang out,” and then Young asks: “Maybe we should do a show?” Young’s bandmates agree, and the beloved quartet all express their excitement to “do a show.”
The clip then ends with a large, red question mark, basically amounting to a “More details to come soon” notice. Watch the video below.
First formed in 1986, No Doubt released five studio albums during their initial run, with songs like the 1995 hit “Just a Girl” becoming an integral part of the pop-punk canon. In the early 2000s, the band embarked on a hiatus, but reunited in 2008 to tour and make another album, 2012’s Push and Shove. They stayed together for a few more years, but after some sporadic shows in 2014 and 2015, the group disbanded again.
In the time since then, a No Doubt reunion hasn’t always seemed likely. In 2016, Stefani told Rolling Stone that she was dissatisfied with Push and Shove and felt creative differences made the band’s future uncertain. In 2022, though, she softened a bit, hinting that a reunion could be possible, and citing the success of Blink-182 in recent years as an indicator that audiences want more ‘90s nostalgia.
Now, No Doubt are back for their third run, and though no additional shows nor new releases have been confirmed, a headlining set at Coachella is certainly something for fans to look forward to. Joining them on the lineup will be another reunion of a legendary ‘90s band: Sublime, who will play with Jakob Nowell, the son of original frontman, Bradley Nowell.
